[history]
One of the most gratifying responses to the tragedies of 9/11 was the sudden desire of millions of Americans to give something back to their country for the blessings of democracy and freedom. Many citizens, especially young ones, would do much more if given the opportunity to serve. A system of voluntary national service would harvest this new growth in our civic capital by mobilizing to meet the big challenges facing our country, including the urgent new one of homeland security.

Note the typical blurring of the distinction between the nation and the government, the assumption that people can't do anything without government guidance, and the downplaying of his Jerry Springer presidency as "the fierce political crossfire of the 1990s".

And while all Americans should be asked to set aside such time as they have for service I missed this line on the first read-through. The man who couldn't set aside his afternoon delight sessions long enough to do his job asks the rest of us for service?

Speaking of faith, has Mr. Clinton and his Bible been seen out in public since January 20, 2001?

Hey where is the BARF ALERT? I never read anything about or by Clinton so your change of the name confused who was the author. Help! Save me from having to look or read anything by this coward.

"Participation in AmeriCorps became a badge of honor for some of our brightest, most promising young people."
If this is true, why didn't the oh-so-brilliant Chelsea go into AmeriCorp?
To: 3AngelaD; q_an_a
I abjectly apologize for the absence of a well-deserved BARF ALERT.

You are exactly right about the blurring between serving your country and serving big government. I wonder how much AmeriCorp has done to win the war on terror? The answer is "not very much". I know there are some good people involved with AmeriCorp, but I find the liberals who push it lacking.
