Pass the Bucket New York, NY, April 22, 2002): -- In celebration of the State of Israel's 54th Anniversary, students at Yeshiva University (NY) have recently raised $54,000 for the families of terror victims. Spearheaded by the student leaders in charge of Kol Haneshama, the newspaper project memorializing victims of terror through biographical sketches, the students collected the funds at just four events in the past five weeks.
The fundraising efforts began on March 13, when Yeshiva University convened a school-wide prayer service in honor of Yom Kippur Kattan, an international day of prayer and fasting in light of the current crisis in Israel. In little more than an hour, students at Yeshiva College and Stern College for Women raised over $5,000, a figure matched dollar-for-dollar by the respective student organizations at both campuses. Ten families of victims in Israel, chosen by Kol Haneshama, received $1,000 each for Passover.
An additional $1,000 was raised during a rally at the Wilf Campus of Yeshiva College on April 12. Three days later, at the National Solidarity Rally with Israel in Washington, D.C. one hundred Yeshiva students were dispatched, each one carrying a collection bucket that bore the face of a terror victim. An astonishing total of $35,000 was raised in only a few hours time.
At Sunday's Tfillah rally in Lower Manhattan, Kol Haneshama recruited dozens of students to raise funds. More than $9,000 was collected.
All donations will be handed over to the Israel Emergency Solidarity Fund - One Family, a relief organization for the families of terror victims in Israel."The Yeshiva community and particularly the student body have proven themselves time and time again as passionate about Israel," said Neil Thalheim, Director of the Fund.
Members of Kol Haneshama's executive committee expressed satisfaction with the recent fundraising efforts. Naphtali Weisz, Project Coordinator from Columbus, OH, noted, "Every generation has its cause, and clearly doing all we can to help Israel through its current crisis is our cause."
Kol Haneshama formed in January 2002 following Operation Torah Shield II, a student-led solidarity mission to Israel by 200 students at Yeshiva University and Stern College. Each month, Kol Haneshama publishes short biographical sketches of Israel's terror victims in nearly 40 Jewish newspapers across the country. Philadelphia-native Joe Hirsch, the Editor of Kol Haneshama, remarked, "We capture the living essence of each victim, and hope that these sketches will memorialize each victim in life, not death." The Kol Haneshama sketches can be viewed at their web site, http://www.kolhaneshama.net

Assistance to families is provided by the Israel Emergency Solidarity Fund - One Family each according to its needs. A professional allocation committee reviews each case individually. All funds collected directly benefit the families of victims of recent terrorism in Israel in the most dignified manner. The distribution of funds is based on comprehensive research of each family's resources, needs and circumstances. Consultations are arranged with social workers, family counselors, and other professionals that are extensively involved with the families. Some families require direct financial support at the time of crisis. Others, overwhelmed by grief, benefit from psychological or child-care services. Some need everday items such as beds or washing machines or refrigerators. Many struggle to celebrate happy occasions despite their losses. The Israel Emergency Solidarity Fund - One Family has participated in the Bat Mitzvah celebration of an orphan, the recovery party of a group of wounded soldiers, the wedding of a young man whose father was murdered 2 months earlier, and even holiday gatherings of hundreds of terror victim families.
The Israel Emergency Solidarity Fund- One Family suggests many ways in which caring people of all affilliations may show their support to terror victims' families. These include: participation in rallies or walk-a-thons, letter writing to victims or bereaved families, learning torah in memory of a terror victim, visiting wounded soldiers or civilians in Israel, contributing financially to aid terror victims or their families or encouraging your synagogue to "adopt" a terror victim family via Project Embrace.
