Statehouses Quickly Passing Segway Scooter Laws
Inventor Claims 'IT' Will Revolutionize Transportation
Posted: 4:41 p.m. EDT June 14, 2002
It's not here yet, but lawmakers across the country are clearing a path on the sidewalks for the introduction of the "Segway" scooter.
The battery-operated 69-pound devices that zip around at about 12 miles an hour were introduced last year -- with claims that they would revolutionize transportation and change the way people live and work.
Legislators hope they can help ease traffic congestion.
It'll still be months before they become widely available, but the company that makes them has waged vigorous campaigns at statehouses all over the United States to make them legal for use on sidewalks.
Twenty-four states have enacted pro-Segway laws over the past six months, and four more are just waiting for a governor's signature.
But worries are growing among doctors and others who fear for the safety of pedestrians if the device becomes as widely used as its inventor expects.

Do they have a horn? Yes....and 10 heads.

I think it would be cheaper and easyer just to ride a bike, a bike can go faster than 12mph and you dont have to recharge it.

Until groups with interest in this decide riding bikes is not healthy. Your stooped over, etc - then they will show how many people a year are injured on bikes, what it costs tax payers a year, etc. Bikes will be outlawed in public places and scooters will only be allowed.
Sadly, as silly as this sounds, it COULD happen. A few slick propoganda thingees, and sheeples will fall inline.

"ROFL! Ahhh I wonder how many lurking democrats will get that one..." None...their thoughts have already jumped to mandatory helmet laws and insurance requirements (for the children, ya' know.)

Ah, the power of lobbying! The best battery operated scooter (Xootr) goes for under one grand and weighs twenty pounds. There are less expensive (and heavier) models. This sixty nine pound baby will costs the corporations and the gubmint six grand and the so-called consumer model will go for three. I say, go for it consumers of America. Credit card companies are waiting!

No helmet for me! Live free of die! I'll take my Segway to Laconia next year! I hear Segway will be selling a bitchin' line of mauve suede chaps and fringed jackets.

"I'll take my Segway to Laconia next year!" What's Laconia? Is that going to be like the Sturgis for Segway riders?

Surely such laws would also allow other ($200) electric scooters too? or just Segway?
To: chance33_98
I Guess the thieves are holding seminars right now on how to properly steal these scooters.

If these things are so safe, why is everybody riding them wearing crash helmets?

None...their thoughts have already jumped to mandatory helmet laws and insurance requirements (for the children, ya' know.) Don't forget figgering out a way to put a $50 per year license plate on it...

Of course, Big Brother has to step in and regulate these things. If it's new, it needs the stamp of The Overlords before it's acceptable.

There's already an
Ambulance-chasing lawyer preparing a class-action lawsuit against it...before the first ones are even sold...
