FERNDALE - A parade where at least 200 people are expected to display pride in their heterosexuality is set to roll along Nine Mile on Sunday. The City Council on Monday approved a request from talk radio station WKRK-FM 97.1 to conduct the parade, which runs from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. from Paxton to City Hall.
The council unanimously approved the radio station's request although one city official expressed some misgivings.
"I'm somewhat skeptical," said Councilman Dave Lennon, "that Ferndale may be used as a stage for a cheap publicity stunt."
Joel Morgan, promotions director for the station, explained that the idea for a "Straight Pride" parade came after callers to the "Kramer and Twitch" show expressed a desire for such an event in the weeks leading up to the Motor City Pride Festival for gays and lesbians in Ferndale on June 2.
Lennon said he hoped the straight pride parade is not being held as a way to mock the annual gay festival, which is hosted by Triangle Foundation of Detroit and is the largest such event in the state.
Morgan said the station wants to make the straight parade an annual event.
"We thought Ferndale would be a place to start," he said. "We are looking to expand Ferndale's reputation as a diverse community. We are (by) no means harassing or assaulting members of the gay community."
A co-producer of the "Kramer and Twitch" show, Steve Green, told city officials he is gay and wholeheartedly supports the straight parade.
A spokesman for Triangle Foundation, a gay advocacy group, last week decried the straight pride parade.
"It mocks the gay community," said Sean Kosofsky, adding that such a parade is akin to celebrating white pride.
But openly gay Councilman Craig Covey said he doesn't see the straight parade as opposing or mocking.
"This parade is actually complementary" to the gay pride festival, Covey said. "Were talking about pride and being proud of who we are."
Resident Sean Drate told the council that the parade sounds like a stunt with questionable intentions, but quipped that many of his good friends are straight.
"My sisters are straight and I love them anyway," Drate said, tongue-in-cheek, adding that a parade for heterosexual pride may help such people "feel less ashamed of themselves" afterward.

So then, does Kosofsky feel that black pride or latino pride mocks the white community? Does gay pride mock the heterosexual community???
I, as do many Christians, believe that homosexuality is an abomination in Gods Eyes. The open flaunting of this perversion and attempt to legitimize it and its immoral and unhealthy behavior is disgusting and offensive. Kosofsky and the rest of the liberals seem completely blind to it. Yet they have no problem attacking a group who may want to promote a normal lifestyle.
When youre unable to see logic, reason and rationality, you cling to whatever you can. Unfortunately for the liberals, it is once again always side with evil.
Owl _ Eagle
Guns before butter.
The celebration of european ancestry being a prima facia evil, of course. Thankfully, it is generally (though perhaps quietly) recognized that people like Kosofsky are idiots.
This "straight pride" parade only falls into the same trap.
"akin to celebrating white pride..." Are you suggesting, then, Sean, that mocking gays is akin to a "racist" sort of thinking and limited to heterosexuals? Isn't that a "sexist" way of thinking?
Ditto that, with corrections. :)
Gee. Don't I recall some difficulty some gay groups had, wanting to march in a St. Patrick's Day parade (in Boston?)? They didn't seem to have any problem with associating with "white pride" then.
And we won't go into all the mockery that appears in --nay, that comprises-- a gay pride parade.
"My sisters are straight and I love them anyway," Drate said, tongue-in-cheek...
It may be sarcasm on this fellows part but unfortunately it is an indication of the Gay communities sense of power in this society that they are calling the shots for many things. I personally have had a job terminated because the boss was gay and didnt like my sense of family values and talking about my wife and kids.
When a persons identity is determined solely by how they use their sex organs and society has bought-in to that sad state of affairs these culture wars are going to be played out on a larger and larger scale.
My experience with teenagers is they mostly have bought into this gay-is-always-good mentality - given the appearance of the Gay-Straight Alliance in our local high school. So the future looks very bleak to me with the gays winning the minds and bodies of our youth!
Nice to see things straightened out.
"STRAIGHTS", we know who you are! Beware...
"It mocks the gay community," said Sean Kosofsky, adding that such a parade is akin to celebrating white pride.
As opposed to the homosexual Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence?
These people need to get a grip.
"It mocks the gay community," said Sean Kosofsky,
A pretty revealing statement - almost an admission of guilt. Gay pride parades are nothing but in-your-face assaults on the heterosexual community. They ooze rebellion, anger, and hatred. Religious beliefs are ruthlessly mocked, and sexual perversions are flaunted in a way that would usually lead to arrest.
adding that such a parade is akin to celebrating white pride.
That remark is plainly racist. Following typical liberal "thinking", his tolerance is extended to homosexuals, blame-shifting minorities, pedophiles, blendered-gendereds, witchdoctors, nature worshippers, drug addicts, pimps, prisoners, fellow terrorists, and other democrats - but whites, republicans, conservatives, and self-controlled responsible citizens (of whatever race - they're all whities at heart) are all evil and should keep their traps shut.
Resident Sean Drate told the council that the parade sounds like a stunt with questionable intentions,
That's rich. As if a gay pride parade is a legitimate celebration of diversity born out of noble intentions. They're more like a bold dare and slap in the face to the community at the same time.
a parade for heterosexual pride may help such people "feel less ashamed of themselves" afterward.
I'll bet there will be far fewer strap on penises, whips and chains, cages, and simulated sex acts. They ought to feel less ashamed than their twisted critics.
