As the 30th anniversary of Watergate nears, student investigators at the University of Illinois have concluded that Deep Throat, the White House source who helped journalists unravel the greatest political scandal in American history, was most likely conservative commentator Pat Buchanan.
Since 1999, journalism professor William Gaines and his students have set about unmasking the elusive informant. Building on the work of their predecessors

I've seen several Deep Throat speculations, but I don't recall any of these names. Sounds like the U of I is competeing with Columbia U for lowest quality of journalism major.
I recently went to the dedication of my grandfather's old automotive station to the fire dept. as a substation. Even though the local paper is mostly conservative leaning, you could spot the reporter in a nanosecond. He was the long haired maggot infested FM type, but a lot of the men had facial hair. He stood out like a commie loser.

Tell the author it get real. Deeo throat was likely to be a pro-communist type who resented Nixon's anti-communist efforts. Certainly not Pat Buchanan.

These guys came so close to have missed the fact that it was John Dean himself who provided Woodward and Bernstein with all the goodies.

Takes my breath away!

Len Colodny is almost certainly correct that "Deep Throat" is not really one individual person, but a literary device; a composite character consisting of several different people.

They asked the Instructor on Dateline and the interviewed all 7 suspects. 6 of the 7 denied being Deep Throat. Pat's office "declined comment".

They got the wrong Pat. Deep Throat was L. PATRICK GRAY, Acting Director of the FBI May, 1972 - April, 1973.

Mine too! Wonder if this is why Pat left the GOP -- Dean has been writing this book for sometime!
To: GeneD
I'm not sure I trust these folks. On the other hand, Buchanan f____ing a Republican president and handing over government to the left would ahrdly be out of character.

"Buchanan may strike some as a surprising choice, because he was known as a Republican loyalist." Well, this is an odd choice of phrase, considering recent history, and I believe this article was written since the 1970's.
