Fine by me, so long as you post a mea culpa if the body is found and the truth comes out that the cops were telling the family what to say in the hopes of preventing the perp from snuffing out this rare little candle.

A ransom note has indeed been recieved, along with instructions not to tell the police. The family and the police are trying to keep up the appearance that the police have not yet been informed. Hence the disjointed strategies and suspects that don't match the description.
