Hey, ladies, here's something you might want to bring up with the gentleman: His organization needs to SERIOUSLY consider a name change. It's too easily confused with that of the radical Left-wing kook-squad, the JDL.

I refuse to sign up for the Slimes' rag-online to post the text -- or even a link, but they totally proved my point that my front page is their back page. They had a picture of Rabbi Lloyd and NY State Assemblyman Dov Hikind and the headline "Rabbi Suspends Plans for Armed patrols by Civilians". On the last page of the "A" section.

It was an AP article, so I'll look for it elsewhere and post it.

Rabbi cancels armed patrols in Brooklyn

(Updates with rabbi canceling patrols)

By David Martin

NEW YORK, June 16 (Reuters) - A rabbi who vowed to mount armed patrols of Jewish areas in Brooklyn in response to perceived threats from Muslim extremists called off the exercise at the last moment on Sunday because he said the police threatened to arrest him.

Rabbi Yakove Lloyd, chairman of the little known Jewish Defense Group, abandoned the widely publicized plan involving two groups of 25 men and women, some of them armed, just before the expected 9 p.m. (0100 GMT) start time.

"We are giving in to a threat by the police," Lloyd told Reuters. He said the police told him he would be arrested and charged with unlawful assembly if he showed up for the patrols, which had also met with some resistance from local residents and their elected officials.

A police spokesman confirmed that the patrols would not take place, but could not comment further.

The rabbi has said the patrols were in response to comments in Iraq last week on CBS News' "60 Minutes" by Abdul Rahman Yasin, who is wanted by the FBI, that he and colleagues had originally planned to attack Jewish neighborhoods before deciding to bomb the World Trade Center in 1993.

Lloyd said he would meet with the commander of the 66th Precinct, Deputy Inspector Robert Napolitano, on Tuesday.

"I want to present myself as a friend not an enemy," Lloyd said, adding his group took a vote and decided not to patrol.

Earlier on Sunday, Lloyd, who lives in Queens, vowed at a news conference to begin the patrols on Sunday night.

"We are activists not vigilantes," Lloyd told reporters. "But if you want to call us vigilantes, that's OK with us. We are working within legal parameters."

A crowd of angry residents and local lawmakers had gathered to denounce Lloyd.

"He's not wanted here and he's not welcomed here," said Brooklyn City Councilman Bill DiBlasio. "His brand of terrorism we don't accept."

Also speaking out against Lloyd were members of Shomrim, a 200-member strong, neighborhood-based citizen's unarmed patrol that works with the New York Police Department.

Lloyd had said there would be about six guns on the 9 p.m. (0100 GMT) to 3 a.m. (0700 GMT) patrol carried legally by men with permits.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly has said police officers would arrest anyone with an unlicensed weapon.

Unlike Lloyd's group, Shomrim have blue windbreakers issued by the police and official department identification cards.

"He's a lunatic looking for publicity," said Sam Follman, a Shomrim coordinator. "We have patrolled here for the past 15 years. We don't need guys with guns and bats walking on our streets. Nobody in our group agrees with him."

NYC Rabbi's Patrol Plan Scorned

NEW YORK, June 16, 2002

At the center of the attention: Rabbi Lloyd's idea for armed patrols is being ridiculed. (AP)

(REUTERS) A rabbi, described by residents and political leaders as a vigilante and “lunatic,” vowed to mounted armed patrols of Jewish areas in Brooklyn in response to perceived threats from Muslim extremists.

“We are activists not vigilantes,” Rabbi Yakove Lloyd, chairman of the little known Jewish Defense Group, told a news conference Sunday. “But if you want to call us vigilantes, that's OK with us. We are working within legal parameters.”

Lloyd, who lives in Queens, said he would return Sunday night with two groups of 25 men and some women to patrol two different parts of heavily Jewish neighborhoods in Brooklyn.

A crowd of angry residents and local lawmakers gathered across the street at the corner of Coney Island Avenue and Avenue J in the Midwood section of Brooklyn to denounce Lloyd.

“He's not wanted here and he's not welcomed here,” said Brooklyn City Councilman Bill DiBlasio. “His brand of terrorism we don't accept.”

The rabbi said the action was in response to comments last week on CBS News “60 Minutes” by suspected bomber Abdul Rahman Yasin in Iraq that he and colleagues had originally planned to attack Jewish neighborhoods before deciding to bomb the World Trade Center in 1993.

Also speaking out against Lloyd were members of Shomrim, a 200-member strong, neighborhood-based citizen's unarmed patrol that works with the New York Police Department.

Lloyd said there would be about six guns on the patrol carried legally by men with permits. He said those with carry permits for handguns would have them and shotguns and rifles would be in proper storage cases.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly has said police officers would arrest anyone with an unlicensed weapon.

“We're looking for anything out of the ordinary,” said Lloyd, who indicated the 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. patrols would be conducted in Borough Park and South Flatbush. “Like a man wearing a heavy coat in the middle of summer for example.”

Unlike Lloyd's group, members of Shomrim have blue windbreakers issued by the police and carry official department identification cards.

“He's a lunatic looking for publicity,” said Sam Follman, a Shomrim coordinator. “We have patrolled here for the past 15 years. We don't need guys with guns and bats walking on our streets. Nobody in our group agrees with him.”

“We don't want vigilantes, we don't need vigilantes,” said Rep. Anthony Weiner, a Brooklyn Democrat. “We don't take kindly to being manipulated by outside influences. There is no need for vigilante justice in our community.”
