"The growth of women entrepreneurs nationwide has progressed at a rate of twice the national average for all businesses, for a total of approximately 9.1 million women-owned businesses in 1999. The number of women-owned businesses in each of the top 50 metro areas grew from 33-59 percent. In California, a state that sets the trend for the nation, the number of women-owned businesses grew 42.2 percent from 1992-1999. Their growth in terms of employment increased by a staggering 140.4 percent, and sales grew by 163.7 percent, making women-owned firms in California the 10th fastest growing in the country. In addition, women represented 35.5 percent of the more than 1.5 million self-employed business enterprises in the state in 1999.
But women would achieve at still higher levels without interference from a tax and regulatory regime that quashes entrepreneurship in general and hinders working mothers in particular."
