The Slippery Slope of TERROR
Step 1: "Only non-citizens will be put before a military tribunal. No need to worry."
Step 2: "Only 'bad' US citizens will be put before a military tribunal. No need to worry."
Step 3: "Actually, there's no need for a military tribunal. We can indefinitely detain US citizens 'until President Bush decides the war against terrorism is over'. No need to worry."
Step 4: -- Fill in the blank for the next step on the slippery slope. --

As an hold North Ireland hand, the path between fighting a succesful COIN war and keeping true to democratic principles is a very rocky path, that can indeed take you down the wrong path of making a bad call for what were good intensions.
The best way to navigate such a path is an informed populace who give neither blanket support or blanket condemnation.
It is not a weakness to question and to constanly review your methods.
The message should always be we will fight this war and we will stay true to the principles that make our nation something worth fighting for.
Cheers Tony

....But we TRUST President Bush, don't we?
He would never do anything bad?
Regardless of whether we trust this administration, giving Bush the power to arbitrarily declare anyone an "enemy combatant" will also bestow that power upon his successor.
Nightmare scenario: President Rodham-Clinton.
Scared, yet?
