US to hunt al-Qaida on LoC

New Delhi, June 12: Reinforcing India’s fears, US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on Wednesday said there were “indications” of al-Qaida terrorists operating near the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir.

“I have seen indications that al-Qaida is operating near the LoC,” he told reporters after a 75-minute meeting with Prime Minister  A B Vajpayee before leaving for Islamabad.

Rumsfeld’s comments assumed significance in the wake of statement by Border Security Force DIG R S Khullar in Srinagar that two militants killed in Drass sector in J&K last week appeared to belong to al-Qaida.

Asked whether the US forces would pursue al-Qaida in Kashmir, he said, “We are getting cooperation of all kinds of countries across the globe to fight al-Qaida and its terrorist network and working to see that these countries do not become a haven for terrorists”.

In a reply to a question, he said, “I don’t have any hard evidence of who, how many or where the al-Qaida terrorists were operating in Kashmir.”

Declaring that “We will have to stop al-Qaida”, he said over 60 countries were supporting the international coalition’s fight against terrorism. He made the comments just before leaving for Pakistan, where he was to continue his shuttle diplomacy aimed at easing tensions between the neighbours.

Rumsfeld's comments fall into the pattern that is developing of late, where the US will send troops along the LoC apparently to fight the al-Qaida but in effect monitoring the LoC. This will mean that the US will become a de facto international force monitoring the Line of Control.

To this end, Rumsfeld said the matter of foreign troops monitoring the Line of Control did come up in his talks with the Indian leadership, though there was some confusion over what he exactly said.

Rumsfeld said "to be honest, yes, the matter did come up." While it was initially taken to mean "the matter" pertained to foreign troops, highly placed Indian government sources and the US embassy stated that the US Secretary had meant sensors to be placed along the LoC and not troops.
