Daley blasts FBI for arrest secrecy
Chicago Sun Times ^ | June 12, 2002 | FRAN SPIELMAN

Posted on 06/12/2002 6:19:54 AM PDT by SJackson

Mayor Daley blasted the FBI on Tuesday for keeping the Chicago Police Department in the dark about a former Chicago gang member-turned-al-Qaida-operative who was arrested at O'Hare Airport last month for allegedly plotting to attack the United States with a radioactive "dirty" bomb.

Daley said he can't understand why Chicago police were asked to assist in the May 8 arrest of Jose Padilla but never told what the arrest was about.

"You criticize the Chicago Police Department. You should criticize the CIA and the FBI. They're not sacred cows. For them to never inform the Chicago Police--don't you trust anybody in the world except yourself? You have to trust people. Why not?" the mayor said.

"The federal government has to work with local law enforcement. If they don't, they're kidding themselves. Look at this person [Padilla]. He changed his name. He can come in and out of this country. Give me a break. Do you think they [local police] don't know about him prior to it? . . . If you have a unit dealing with surveillance and a unit dealing with organized crime and gangs, they could have gathered . . . some information."

Padilla was arrested at O'Hare after arriving in Chicago from a trip that originated in Pakistan. He was allegedly returning to the United States to scout possible targets for terrorist attacks.

Instead of informing the Chicago Police Department about the reasons for the arrest, the feds merely asked for assistance. They kept the lid on Padilla's suspected al-Qaida ties for more than a month.

"We were advised he was coming in. We were in the loop . . . on this. [But] the substance of this investigation did not evidence itself until sometime down the line," said First Deputy Police Supt. John Thomas.

"We just knew that federal agencies were looking for this particular individual, who was inbound" on a flight to O'Hare.

On Tuesday, an angry Daley demanded to know the reason for the cloak-and-dagger secrecy.

"You tell us June 10--a month later--for an arrest on May 8? What was the big thing to know? Everybody knew he was arrested. His family--everybody," Daley said.

The mayor added, "Look how many firemen and police officers got killed at the World Trade Center. They're just as honest and decent and hardworking as anyone else. . . . You can have an investigation and you can trust people on the local level as well as on the federal level. This idea that 'We're the only ones who can protect America' is greatly mistaken."

Even Richie is right once in a while, especially if there's a gang or prison conversion connection involved.

Not to mention the fact that Chicago could be a target. Doesn't quite fit with our weekly media warnings.

Actually I figured this weekly warning was timed to distract from the Home Defense Agency whatever reorganization that was starting to catch a little flack from both sides of the House. They didn't exactly arrest him in the past week, why they timed the release of details had me wondering.

Maybe Daley will figure it out sometime in the future.

Hey, Richie, nice try there, grasping at some of that glory for yourself. But, anyone with at least half a brain (that should include you) knows it's not necessarily the rank-and-file cops the Feds can't "trust."

You're exactly right! If Daley had been informed beforehand, and if the arrest hadn't been botched as a result, he would be crowing on TeeVee now about his wisdom and bravery.

The Giggler has made a habit of undermining the local cops and now he is complaining because they were not given details. Detail this Richie!!

FBI to cops "pick up this mutt and turn him over to us." Cops "O.K." This is all that need be said.

Why doesn't the Giggler start asking RAT Congressman Luis Guterriez (sp) if he still supports terrorists. That PoS lauds and assists those who attack the U.S.

From what I have heard, they only released the details because they were going to transfer him to the DoD and they were afraid that the transfer would be leaked in the press, who, of course, has skewed the facts as usual.

To Editor for Editorial page.

Richard Daley is just whining about not being able to be in the spotlight to get credit for capturing a bad guy. Instead he wants to disarm the citizens of Chicago.

Citizens in 44 states “Do not fear Gun Owners who “Citizen Carry” (CC).”

In 1986 only eight (8) states allow “citizen carry” (CC) and crime was on the rise. In the year 2001, 42 states now have CC laws on the books and crime continues to drop. Researchers to the self-defense issue, has noticed crime begin dropping immediately after enactment in each state and showed up four - five years before the Brady law. Our Indiana neighbor has issued 350,000 CC permits and zero (0) has been revoked for a firearms homicide. In these states Police Chief’s are pleasantly surprised in the quality of the applicant.

There are 21 times more (est. 2,500,000) CC owners than “street” policeman (120,000) in the United States. Policemen killed 330 innocent citizens in 1996 and CC’ers (30). Statistically you are 300 times more likely to be innocently shot by a policeman than a CC owner. Sidebar: 700,000 Doctors kill by mistake 90,000 people annually in our nation. Our hearts should go out to each and every family and our heads need to be crystal clear on this issue. Also Citizen Carry citizens commit less crime that even Police officers as a statistical group.

Women are the fastest growing group of gun owners in the United States. “Dial 911 and Die” is real with 911 response times from 5 to 30 minutes. Police only stop 4% in the act violent crime. What logic would as representative suggest to a woman to “talk down” the rapist with AIDS or HIV or STD? 10 minutes is a long time. Get your watch and start talking. Do GG (Gun Grabbers) honestly think the rapist will use a condom? Women should be outraged at the GG for forcing such defenseless thinking. Did you know most rapes last from 2 to 4 hours.

Question? Why do you think, judges, probation officers, bail bondman, attorneys and social workers are given the right to CC or decide to carry illegally? If you ask they will tell you, they are dealing bad guys everyday and know the mindset of these early release felons.

Bad guys will always have guns. It is “dumb and dumber” to believe America is safer by taking away firearms from honest American Citizens or to make felons. Anti gun groups and faulty ordinances in Chicago land are doing just the opposite providing “gun free zones” for criminals to operate in.

Most all State Statues are written to protect the general public not the individual. It is the individual’s responsibility to protect themselves and their families at home and away from home.

Road Rage: It is a myth that CC owners kill cops, or citizens with Road Rage. In the United States over the last twenty years only two (2) known road rage shootings have occurred. Believe me if Road Rage shootings were a problem, the Gun Grabbers (GG’ers), would let us know. One case, after a car accident in TX, the driver begins to punch the man in the face, breaking his eye socket, nose. Profusely bleeding from the face and fearing for his life, the 65 yr old driver pulled his gun and shot the road raged driver saving his life.

· My personal thoughts: Every solid citizen who elects to “CC” carry’s a tremendous burden. This burden is to stay legal, or be charged with a felony or at least a grand jury indictment, should they ever break one of 25,000 gun laws or kill an attacking criminal. We have plenty of criminal laws to put them away for life should any CC’er turn to the dark side. · Jesus in the Bible was smart enough to cast blame on Cain for killing Abel, not blame the stone. Those who believe the “GG” fear spinners need to wake up. · One final closing thought, Christian religions and other religions teach the need to protect ones self. Jesus said in Luke 22:36 30 He that hath no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one. The sword was the finest weapon outside of the home of its time, far better than rocks, clubs, and stones.

It's really to bad the FBI didn't arrest the biggest terrorist organization in Chicago, Mayor Daley. His socialist reforms are hurting more businesses and people than any normal terrorist could ever dream of.

Daley is a moral midget. The entire political establishment in Chicago is rotten to the core. I would be shocked, shocked if the F.B.I. and the C.I.A. weren't aware of what a sieve the entire Chicago government is.

The Giggler has made a habit of undermining the local cops ...

Yeah, Richie blew the budget beautifying the city and all manner of big dollar projects that benefit his buddies--many who have verified organized crime connections. And, the first group that he wants to screw over is the police department and fire department. Go figure!

If Daley paid more attention to the Chicago gang problem and spent less time hunting for a camera to pose for, there might be fewer Padillas for the FBI to worry about.

I can't believe you'd agree with this moral mutant.
