This is a great thread. Good thing I'm not incontinent or I'd be out buying a new desk chair in the morning.

On a more serious note, my sister is hand-raising a baby raccoon at this very minute. His name is Jimmy, how cute. Apparently his mother ended up as roadkill and my darling nephew brought home the little orphan.

I'll have to email this thread to her.

What area is this that you are in?

Black bears don't have to be black. They come in all colors... red, grey, and even white. There is even a rare color that they call blue. It is similar to the color in dogs that they call blue...as in blue merle, or blue healers(sp).

I THINK coons do. I know that squirrels and chipmunks do.

They sure do.. like five cats in a bag w/ a bulldog...
I've also heard, but can't confirm, that rabies is
transmissable in a humid earthen space like a crawl beneath a house, where the virus can survive..
The CDC says inhalation transmission of rabies is possible..

Possums carry a central nervous system parasite
that causes a disese in horses called
Equine Protozoal Myoencephalitis or EPM...
Sarcocystis neurona is spread in possum excrement..
Check your hay bales, if you have them, and discard any that have suspicious spoor..

They don't call them "varmints" for nothin'...

Puhlese...the "color" of the victim. Was this another case of racial profiling. Have you noticed that the youngster bitten by the shark in Florida waters was white. Obviously, a Demoncrap retaliation for the Gore debacle in Florida in 2000!!

Did anyone notice that Martha Moxley and Elizabeth Smart kinda looked alike. The girls have an X and Z in their names respectively. As yourself "Y". What are the odds?

And what's with this Padilla. Does he have a headlight out????

Foil hats anyone?

Yeah, rabbits do too.

But the sound I'm talking about is too loud for those little rodents. In fact, it's even a little too loud for a little kid. It woke me up from a dead sleep and my first thought was that someone stabbed a teenage girl right near my bedroom window, then I heard it again and thought it was a little kid for a moment, but realized it was too loud and a little too animalish. THat's why I thought it might be a coon. I've heard it a couple more times since, but further away.

That first time scared the bejeezes out of me. I actually took a couple steps towards my shotgun before getting my senses back, and when they did come back, I thought I was gonna pass out...way too much adrenaline, hehe.

Modern rabies shots are no big deal. I had a series about 12 years ago after I was attacked by stray tomcat. I understand that earlier rabies shots involved getting them in the abdomen or something. Now it's just normal little shots in the arm -- I think I had one a week for three weeks, and then the last one two weeks later. And they give you a bunch of little pin prick shots around the perimeter of the wound when you first show up for treatment.

"These bandit faces may be 'cute' but they are some of the meanest animals out there..."

That has not been my experience with coons. - I have found them to be fairly gentile, if a bit demanding, and quite intelligent.

I strongly suspect that the subject coon was indeed rabid. - The big problem with them is that they are omnivorous, and often end up eating something rabid.

"Saturday morning, my boy was on the deck and the little bastard hissed at him from below."

Your coon is a female with a litter; that is when they hiss. - We have them looking in our patio door frequently, trying to get the cat's attention.

I had a pet Raccoon as a kid. He grew to be a big old fat male and wouldn't let anyone near him but me. Loved Snicker bars too.

If you see a raccoon in daylight hours or unafraid of humans, think rabies.

Thank God for those shots. That poor kid would probably die without them. And, they are not as horrible as they used to be.

Did they find a hook in the side of their car after they got home?

You're priceless!

Whooops...many states have laws about this...sometimes you're actually supposed to call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator (I kid you not)...States with strong anti-rabies laws would be the ones which might levy a hefty fine on your kind-hearted sister if the wrong person found out and tattled...

Little Bastard that is why everyone needs to have a gun especially where wild animals live. On my old farm my dog got bit on the nose by a possum I took the old double headed axe and removed the head of one marsupial that day. He was physically hanging from the nose of my dog with his sharp little fangs. Fortunately marsupials donot carry rabbies accourding to my vet.

So much for those stuffed teddy bears and stuffed raccoons that make everything look nice.  Much like a TV media person makes everything look nice.  Inside they are globalists.

I knew a woman who had a raccoon as a pet.  It had been neutered.  She said that "whole" they are considered dangerous, especially in breeding season.  Because the Animal Rights Wackos have so damaged how America deals with animals, trapping in many areas which would control increases of wild animals has been stopped or hindered and rabies has soared.  One of the seals in Revelation is that people would be subjected to the "beasts of the field" and that could well include bears and wolves released into the wild now.

Some time ago I found a website about people who raised large wild animals, like cougars and other big cats.  They had an extensive section picturing the gear that was needed to handle the animals, size of pistol, and other equipment.  There was also an explicit article advising anyone considering raising wild animals to do some research and see if you want your life transformed by the experience.  They require lots of care and can turn on you at any time and kill you.  Even every day handlers were told to never turn their back on a big cat.  A bull can kill you, even if raised as a pet.  It is naive to think something wild would not.  Wild = Wild.

Missouri Ozarks. The bears have been reintroduced (from Arkansas, iirc, along with other wildlife, including wolves and panthers. Wild animals, imho, are feeders of opportunity, they'll go where they find food of any kind, and hang around. Never get between a wild animal and its food, or its young.

Someone mentioned an animal that sounds like a woman or a child screaming, that could be a panther.

Talking about vicious domesticated animals, don't forget geese! LOL! Those critters have sawtooth bills! Our gander got hold of my jeans, once, and BEAT me with his wings! Left bruises!
