County school elections today

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Published on Mon, Jun 10, 2002 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Voters head to polls as contested races in Howell and Hartland mark ballot

Elections for all five of the county's school districts is being held Monday, with Howell and Hartland having the only contested races.

Each of the candidates are running for a four-year team on their school boards, which will end in 2006.

In Brighton, Fowlerville and Pinckney, one incumbent in each district is running for an open seat.

The polls will open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. in all school districts.

Howell

Incumbents Sue Swartz and Roger Dresden are campaigning as a tandem for re-election to the school board.

Swartz is the board's vice president and Dresden is the board secretary. They are running together with the theme of "Keeping the Team Together."

Dresden and Swartz came up through the ranks of the district's parent-teacher organizations. They currently have children enrolled in the school system.

Challenging the incumbents are Barton Hellmuth and J.J. Lewis.

Hellmuth served on the board for 16 years before he was defeated by Jeanne Clum in his bid for re-election last year. He spent 25 years as a teacher at Novi Middle School. Since 1987, he has been a board member with the Livingston Educational Service Agency.

Lewis is a recent graduate of Howell High School. He has served in numerous organizations while at the high school.

Lewis was a student council representative to the school board, a student liaison to the Howell city council, and the editor-in-chief of the student newspaper, the Main 4.

He will attend Lansing Community College this fall and live in Howell.

Voting precincts for the Howell school district are at Highlander Way Middle School, 511 N. Highlander Way; Oak Grove United Methodist Church, 6686 Oak Grove Road; Marion Township Hall, 2877 W. Coon Lake Road; Latson Road Elementary School, 1201 S. Latson Road; and Oceola Township Hall, 1577 N. Latson Road.

Hartland

Five residents are vying for two positions on the Hartland school board in an election set for Monday.

Incumbent and current president Julie Hill is seeking re-election, but current treasurer Ted Andrews is not seeking another term. There are four challengers: Steve Matschikowski, Sue Aberasturi, Matt Lenart and Nora Kessel.

Hill brings more than a decade of board experience with her, having served on every committee in the district at various times throughout the years. She is also certified by the Michigan Association of School Boards and is currently one of only 13 MASB ambassadors in the state. She's currently the liaison to the Livingston County Association of School Boards.

CAST YOUR VOTE

Elections for all five of the county's school districts are being held today.

Howell and Hartland have contested races, while Brighton, Fowlerville and Pinckney will have incumbents running uncontested.

The board positions are four year terms, ending in 2006.

Polls in all districts will open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.

Kessel was previously on the board for three-and-a-half years before she was defeated in last year's board election. She's been president of the Parent Teacher Association in all of the schools at one time or another and currently volunteers in the schools.

Lenart is currently the president of Hartland Area Youth Athletic Association, of which he has been involved for eight years. He's also been involved with Cub Scouts and Hartland Wrestling Club, and is the vice-president of a small property management and development company. Lenart ran for a position on the school board last year, to which he was not elected.

Running their campaign together, Sue Aberasturi and Matschikowski would bring both church and work experience to the board. Aberasturi, wife of current board member Charlie Aberasturi, has worked as a material buyer, supervisor and scheduler and is involved in her church, Girl Scouts and the classroom, while Matschikowski brings both administrative and staff experience as a pharmacist as well as church and classroom activities.

And with the exception of Hill, whose youngest just graduated from Hartland High School, all of the candidates have children in the school district.

Also on the Hartland Consolidated Schools' ballot this year is a library millage renewal and the election of the library's board of trustees. Millage funds are the library's operating costs, and the 1.6 mill, 10-year renewal could bring in up to $1.2 million for the library in its first year.

Board candidates Nancy Nawrocki, Donald Thompson and Gary Cornillaud are running unopposed for three of the five available spots on the library board. Appointments will be made for the other two open seats.

Voting for all three precincts will be held at Hartland High School.

Brighton

Incumbent board secretary Joyce Powers holds the only seat available on this year's ballot and she is the only person running for it. Voting precincts in Brighton are at Maltby Middle School, 4740 Bauer Road, and Hawkins Elementary School, 8900 Lee Road.

Fowlerville

Incumbent Kevin Robertson intends to retain his seat on the Fowlerville board. His seat is the only one opening up this year. The voting precinct is at Munn Middle School, 450 N. Hibbard St.

Pinckney

Tasha Lebow is looking to retain her seat on the Pinckney school board. Her seat was the only one available this year. Lebow was first elected in 1994 and has served two four-year terms. Voting precincts are located at Village Elementary School, 935 W. M-36, and Country Elementary School, 2939 E. M-36.

This is the first election I'm ever missing an election. It's uncontested. If it's contested, please vote.

I THINK all state school board elections are today, but I'm not positive.
