SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) - Clint Eastwood was sworn in as a state parks commissioner at the beginning of the 100-year birthday celebration for Big Basin Redwood State Park, California's oldest state park. "You're all under arrest," he told the crowd as he held up his new parks commissioner badge.

"You're paying for it. Your tax dollars are paying for it," he said. "So I want you to come and enjoy it. They're the best bargain you'll ever have."

Was that a promise or a threat?

He is right, and it is important to establish the precedent - before the enviro-extremists start pushing bills to ban humans from setting foot in state parks because we are so dangerous to the biosphere.

Too bad they don't like guns. I'd love to see Eastwood look them in the face and say "Go ahead punk, make my day".

Now here's a celebrity that's doing something. Instead of just giving lip service to his beliefs, he's actually putting in the time to help. People like Eastwood are part of the solution instead of the problem. Even if you don't agree with what he's doing, you have to give him credit for walking the walk.

Will Eastwood resign from this office like he did as Mayor of Carmel?

Eastwood also encouraged conservationists to "put your money where your mouth is."

I like that quote.

Its actually nice to see a libertarian (which he is unabashed about) actually doing something that doesn't seem to fly in the face of conservatives.

In my area and in my local paper, people have been saying that they are willing to pay higher taxes to purchase land to allow for more open space. What I want to know is, will these people let the townships/county/state own these lands outright, or will they demand say in what goes on on these "open spaces"? It souns like a huge scam to me. Is taxpayer money, that therefore should belong to you and me (a fact NOT obvious to the average "Joe Shmoe" and "Jane Soccer Mom") being used to allow township/county/state governments to buy up land and take control of it?

If taxpayer money is being used to buy land, "shares" should be given to all taxpayers. If they need land to be developed in the future, these "shareholders" should vote to see what happens to it, AND RECEIVE MONEY BACK (plus profit) if and when it is sold to a private group or is used for local/state/county purposes. Anything else, in my opinion is a scam!!!

The problem with the state parks for the past decade has been "non-maintenance,"

Carry_Okie was making this very point on a thread here:

California:State's acquisition saves 25,000 acres of redwoods

Clint, its time to create a State Park shooting range.

I think that is a great idea, but likely to never happen.

As to Clint be sworn in as Parks Commissioner, I have only one comment......"make my day!" (sorry, I couldn't help myself)

Why should we "energize people to buy lands" when we can't even maintain what we have?

I think they should sell off some land for development and use the balance for a trust fund to maintain what remains. The land in Malibu Creek State Park is worth billions of dollars, and yet I don't see so many visitors to it that it couldn't be trimmed a bit without anyone noticing.

Yes, I go frequently, and I've paid my $35 annual parking fee - and yes, it is a great bargain. I surely hope that fee goes to the park instead of trying to shore up the general fund as I suspect.

Incidentally, freeloaders should visit the park on weekday evenings, when there is hardly ever anyone there to take your $2 parking fee. A sensible policy considering how few people come. Park visitors are awfully influential considering their puny numbers.

Too bad he didn't really do that to all the camera hog politicians I'm sure were there. ;-)

From what I read, he only became mayor of Carmel to get his way with some building permits that were refused. All his little "cliches" are cute, but definitely not the true Clint. I wish they were.
