I went and bought a CD burner for my computer just when Napster went down. Are there any other sites out there?

I think WinMX and something called Morpheus are supposed to be good.

Audiogalaxy is excellent.
Some of the file-sharing programs listed above (Imesh, KaZaA) share ALL file types, so whatever you do, do NOT place confidential files in directories that you share with the entire internet. I'm amazed at how many people do this.

WinMX is very, very good and easy. Much like Napster was. I am going to try AudioGalaxy right now. It looks excellent.

I get my music from
mp3.com. It's free, it's legal, and it's a hell of a lot more interesting than the same-old pop junk. Most music is made by people without recording contracts. I like surf rock. Almost all the best surf rock is made by bands who do it for fun. There just isn't any at Wal-Mart. Never will be. The same goes for a lot of other genres. So I have no need to "steal" music, never mind the fact that anyone who sent me a song without profiting from having done so would be well within established fair use doctrine.
So the RIAA and MPOA don't really have defense of copyright as their primary goal. They are defending their business model where a tiny fraction of artists get rich from recording contracts and nobody ever hears the rest. And in defnding this probably undefendable business model, they want to impose Big Brother in everyone's PC. No thank you. I will simply stop buying commercial CDs - they are too harmful to my privacy, which I find much more valuable than any music.

I went and bought a CD burner for my computer just when Napster went down. Are there any other sites out there? Indeed they are. And as the article states, file-swapping is far more prevalent today than it was during the heyday of Napster. As I said back when Napster was being shut down, the genie is out of the bottle and there is no way the music industry can shut it (file-swapping) down.
I use WinMX which has almost the exact same interface as Napster. WinMX is recommended by me because they don't insert "spyware" on your computer and you can find pretty much anything you are looking for.
I have discovered a lot of great music on WinMX that I never would have heard on the radio. The band Nickel Creek is a good example. I discovered their music just last week and I already ordered the CD through Amazon.com (can't find it in record stores either).

WinMX is the best, IMHO and no spyware is on it. Many of the other download services put spyware on your computer. A really great software program called Ad-aware can find and delete any spyware found on your computer and its free.

WinMX is good and they've finally released their latest version. (A year after the fact, but oh well) If you are basically tired of waiting around, then go to the newsgroups. (If you don't have Cable, DSL, or T1, T3's..you could be screwed on doing this) Also, Morpheus will be good when the stupid PREVIEW EDITION becomes the FULL EDITION!

WinMX. Stay way away from Kazaa, unless you like spyware.
