"We're all passengers on this ship. God knows where it's going."
Defense attorney Mickey Sherman made that observation at the start of jury selection in the Michael Skakel murder case in April - which seems like a millennium ago.
Tuesday the ship was adrift, waiting for a jury's actions to end the voyage.
Both sides in the case have played out their hands, and on the first day of deliberations Tuesday they lapsed into wait-and-see mode. For Sherman, that meant endless pacing and idle chitchat, and admitting to nervousness and nausea.
"How's Michael coping?" he was asked.

We should revive the old Hartford Times. With your money and my...um...well...err...my something, surely we could get a dozen or so subscribers in this state 8^)
I'll be the Nakie Loeb of the Constipation State and you can be my editor. We'll make history! David Lightman could still be our "man" in the Beltway! LOL &;-)
If I was forced to guess I would bet on a hung jury. Despite their many crimes I don't think I've ever seen a Kennedy found guilty of anything. You're bound to get a few of their suckmasters in any group of 12, especially in New England.
Actually it should have been "We should revive the old Hartford Times." As in agreement rather than a statement ;^)
Yeah, Mr. Lightman does such a fine job of fair, unbalanced reporting not unlike the rest of the Courant staff. Maybe we could get Horgan and the Jackal-in as well.
If any one would like to be removed from my CT Bump list, please let me know and it will be done ASAP. Conversely, if you would like to be added the same holds true.
The state never really proved their case beyond a reasonable doubt. Zero physical evidence and fuzzy thirty year old memories from a gaggle of seriously flawed witnesses.
If they were the least bit interested in it, they could have easily convicted him at the time he actually did it. But the Greenwich cops were more interested in not offending the Kennedys. Besides, there was donuts to eat.
Skakel had left the court grounds with his bodyguard mid-morning, and was several minutes away when Kavanewsky summoned everyone into court to lay out for the jurors the ground rules for breaks they take outside the building. Kavanewsky glared at the defendant's empty chair and demanded, "Mr. Sherman, where's your client? I want him here, on site."I don't remember him having a body guard in previous articles. Has he had threats
Kavanewsky took a brief recess and reconvened when Skakel appeared. He did not address Skakel directly, but told the lawyers, "Counsel are to be immediately available to the court, and that applies to the defendant as well. You can go off-site from 1-2 [p.m.]."
He has had the bodyguard all along. The guy is Michael Bolton's (barf) former body guard. Something like 6'6" 350 lbs. trained in firearms and martial arts. Don't think I'd want to test him. There have been some threats but nothing major that we've been privy to.
