It`s a MOVIE!It`s based on Clancy`s book. It`s a work of fiction.Clancy's books are well researched and all have technically and politically plausible plots and military actions. His biggest fan base is within the ranks of the military because of the realism in his books and his understanding of weapons systems, their capabilities and actual uses.
In fact, Clancy was grilled by the pentagon and several other agencies responsible for keeping military secrets, secret, because of his accurate knowledge and some of the dots he connected in the plot in The Hunt For Red October.
What Hollywood does with it after they buy the rights is not something he or any author can control. They can argue, but thats all.

I think you hit the nail exactly. And I say that based on 31 years with the Dept of Army doing weapons systems testing. Clancy hardly ever screws up the technical details. The political, I can't vouch for, but they always seem pretty plausible to me.

Just a note. In the credits Clancy is listed as the film's associate producer. That's a bit more than just selling the rights. As for the flick, I enjoyed it, and if you could replace the neo Nazis with European Union industrialists and social engineers I could envision a plot to bring about some kind of exchange to eliminate Russia and cripple the U.S. Afterall these two nations have soul and the modern EU bureaucrat revels in his materialism. Doing away with soul would be something to be found on their plate.

Well ... you can get editorial control, but you have to have it written into the contract. Not many writers are strong enough to get that kind of contract. But ... some DO!
