I happend to see the original report of the people falling into the crevasse.
While it's a wonderful thing that there are people that will take the chance (their life into their own hands) to perform a rescue attempt of this nature (God bless them!)...
All the blame should fall upon these "thrill seekers" who, knowing the risks (to their own lives) involved, decided to attempt climbing this mountain.
Bottom line IMHO, leave them to the consequences of the decision they made as a warning to the others that may wish to follow in their footsteps.

I agree when you involve youself in recreational high risk activities you should not expect others to risk their lives to save yours. Personal Responsibility is the answer. If you want rescued go in groups with others who share your interest and use the buddy system.

Yea, I saw the video on Fox. Wow it was unbeleivable.

I'd say though, that any crewmembers who were strapped in probably had a good chance of surviving, though if they weren't they could be in trouble. It rolled down the mountain quite a bit after it crashed.

If you're going to crash on a mountain, that's the way to do it.

Could have been much, much worse.

Let's see white water rafting? Wear lifejackets and this is usually done in groups experienced in getting a person out of the water. Sky diving? DUH! How many second chances there? Pleasure boating? Life jackets and anyone can pull you out. Hiking in the woods? I think a person getting lost should pay for the rescue or serve time on a team in payback. If you use some common sense in hiking it is about the most safest recreation activity.

Now climbing a mountain is another story. You are dealing with many life threatening and variable conditions. Weather, gear, snow banks, and your general physical condition. You should not expect another person to risk their lives for your high risk recreation activities.

I would add to your list, going to the Arctic or Anartic for any reason, deep sea exploration, any type of hunting or fishing excursion...

Me too...I am a "risk taker"...I pay annually for SPECIAL insurance so I can enjoy MY risky hobby...I am a scuba diver and I pay for special insurance. Amazing thing to me is this...I have been on trips where people had accidents (hell one died) and NO insurance and they had the nerve to get pissy...when they didn't recieve top of the line services! The one who died...no insurance and was treated like "cargo" days later back to the states...

It's up to the rescuer as to weather or not they want to risk their lives to save someone who got themselves in a situation.

As a pleasure boater, it's wonderfull to be out on the water, and with due care can be very enjoyable. I'm sure rafting, camping, hikeing and all of these things are reasonable activities.

I have no problem with these people being liable for the expenses incurred in their rescue should they get in trouble, but I have a tough time being righteously indignant on that point so long as my tax dollars are going to support democrat voteing crack heads in New York city.

I mean at least these people are likely to be tax payers.
