FReeper Sleuths! Gary Condit and the Mystery of the Chandra Levy Pinky Ring!

From the New York Post:

"Police believe this missing tiny pinkie ring could be the key to solving the Chandra Levy murder case.

A gift from her mother, Susan in 1998, it was one of the 24-year-old Bureau of Prisons intern's most cherished possessions and her family has said she wore it constantly.

The 14-carat gold ring was bought for $416 and has two diamond chips and the initials "CL" inscribed.

But it was not among the personal items found during the extensive police search of the wooded hillside in Rock Creek Park where Levy's remains were discovered last week, Washington police spokesman Joseph Gentile said yesterday. "

After doing an exhaustive search of my own image archive, I could only find one image where Chandra is shown wearing a ring (below left). This ring happens to be on her ring finger and NOT on her pinky as has been reported in the press. Certainly, it may be a different ring, but it might just be the one described above and pictured below.

In this thread, FReepers brigette and Helen, along with others, were discussing this ring and the ring on Condit's finger found in the photo below . I have also searched my personal news photo archive and simply cannot find another photo of Condit wearing ANY rings..or any ring at all!

Now, some would say that Condit would be insane to wear Chandra's ring, but I say he's a nut, and at this point in the investigation (I believe, August of 2001), a point where he took a little swipe at a photographer, he had this small ring on his finger? And if you were the guilty party and had the ring, what better place to keep it but on your very own finger.

Was this an act of Providence? Coincidence? Maybe both. But either way, I'd like to see, and the police should certainly see, an enlargement of that photo with Condit wearing a tiny little ring on his pinky finger.

So what gives FReepers? Can any of you find an image of Condit where he is wearing a ring on ANY of his fingers?

There is your mission!

(BTW, yes, I spell Pinky with a "y")

I also saw size four on a news article, but if Chandra was totally gone on the guy, could she not have had her ring sized to fit him? They ought to check out the jewelers in the area or her check book and credit cards to see if a jeweler is listed there. Think about it, the ring was probably the thing she could give him that had the most meaning for her.

See, I am confused about that. The police said yesterday I think they are searching for her ring...and then I remembered someone posting on FR they found it days ago (with the body I think like you said). I am very confused as to what the heck is going on with this ring thing. There may be two rings. I don't have a freaking clue.

One of the items police found near the remains was a gold ring engraved with the initials "C.L." One law-enforcement source told The Times that the ring was found in a shallow grave with some of the remains.

Was the ring found, or not?

It doesn't matter. What matters is when it was put there. And.....has the size been changed on it to fit Condit? Maybe that is why the ring wasn't on her finger when they found her. Even with decomposition, wouldn't the ring still be around her finger? If it were planted later, it wouldn't necessarily be on her body. I doubt anyone would find great pleasure in touching a decaying body.

OK! Back to the subject:

July 10, 2001: Chief Ramsey announced that the police would search Condit's apartment, obtain a DNA sample, and administer a polygraph exam to Condit. Condit was seen suspiciously placing something in a trashcan in Alexandria, VA. A report was made to the police. The investigation found a watchbox for a Tag Hauer watch they traced back to Joleen Argentini-McKay. The watchcase was packed inside a Big Mac container. Condit's senior staffer Mike Dayton drove the car. Police later confirmed with Bureau of Prisons co-workers that Chandra wore a man's Tag Hauer watch.

From 11:15 PM to 3 AM the next morning investigators searched Condit's apartment

If the picture was taken at the time he made his confessional in July,,,,, just maybe he did wear the "C" "L" ("Condit" "Levy") ring. Where better to hide something than in plain view????

In the same article you just linked to, what's his name, you know, the man always pictured on FR eating donuts (lol) would not confirm whether the ring was found or not.

Also it would probably be the best way to get something out of a place the police are searching. No investigator had any desire to go near Condit. I certainly can't see any investigator asking about, let alone noticing it.

I originally found those photos in an extensive Condit photo gallery - I believe it was About.com. It did provide the photographer's name.

Haven't been able to locate it today.

Was picture taken before or after July 7th, when he finally admitted to having the affair????That is question #1?
I would understand her giving GC the ring for him to wear.... Sort of a bonding thing...
.Did she give him back the bracelet? Or did he (or Mrs. C) take it back? WHEN???

Ok, Ok, but I know registered can take it. ;)

I didn't see the ring in the second photo...but closer view of the pic shows a distortion in the area (also on the pad of the thumb.)

If the first photo can be linked from a news site, I'm a complete believer!

If it's the same ring...

Chandra may have given it to him. He may be wearing it in some kind of dopey attachment to her.

He may have taken it off her body. Why? Thinking that it would deter identification of her (not well thought out plan, but such happens a lot in the panic of crime). He may have taken it off to make it look like a robbery, along with the watch, but in dopey sentimentality kept the ring. Remember, he thinks he's smarter than everyone else. Might also be a Sherlock Holmesian psychology, that criminals unconsciously want to be caught, so they give clues.

As for the watch, he may hide the box to stave off a connection to the watch. But if the watch was not found, and he disposed of the watch elsewhere, why would the box be such a big deal? On the other hand, if the type of watch was publicized before, and with the threat of a search, he recognized there was a piece of evidence in his home connecting him to a "Tag Heuer". His incompetent disposal of the box may be sherlock holmsian too.

Or, maybe, creepy/guilty son of a preacher man he is, he is just covering up his affairs in his blundering way.

Many permutations and possibilities. Ping me on ring stories.

Interestingly, the Modesto Bee story today about the ring pairs a photo of the design of the ring with a pic of Gary - and of all the pics possible, they use the second Karate Chop one. Is the editor saying something to us???

Sorry... I still don't think that is her missing ring on his little pinky. I would say that Chandra's little missing ring would fit more around his little winky than his little pinky!
