Anyone failing their emissions tests in Texas?

Posted on 05/28/2002 1:05:24 PM PDT by Violette

I went to get my car's emission test done today; I failed. I have an older european import, but it is in awesome condition. If mine failed, I can only imagine how many others have failed. Anyone wish to share?

Move to Florida. No emissions tests in many areas anymore.

I had a 9 year old Honda with 200,000 miles that failed emissions. I think that there is a conspiracy here.

Come on, did you think it would last forever? Parts wear out or become clogged. Vacuum hoses dry out and leak. It happens.

I read that these tests were very very tight and that even NEW cars were failing. I'm just trying to get an idea of what other people in Texas (Houston) are experiencing.

The states set the limits to meet a goal of removing X percent of cars older than ten years each testing year.

What did you fail for, hydrocarbons, CO or NOx? On what part of the test did you fail? What was the weather?

Just go buy a can of stuff from the auto store made to help "pass emissions." I hear it actually works.

It doesn't suprise me none it's usually that way by design. I don't know about Texas but when I was stationed in Virginia the Navy required us to have our cars inspected by the state even though we were not legal residence and had tags to prove it. I never took any vehicle through one of these extortion stations that didn't find at least one or two problems they could repair. It really made them mad when you pulled up fixed it yourself and denied them the honor of a repair bill on top of their inspection fee.

BTW I doubt very seriously the state of Texas could care less about emissions and Mexico is most likely the source of their if any pollution anyway. It's a tax and nothing more just another way to empty your pockets into the states coffers.

Does anyone think that Metro stands to benefit from cars not passing? Who gains to make the most money if they fail? And for those people who absolutely cannot afford the expense of repairs or even a new car, what then? They probably wouldn't even be able to afford the fines associated with driving without the sticker.

I failed for methane, but funny that it had nothing to do with my car.

Yea just like the converter that plugged on my van after a grueling 65,000 miles. I remeoved it and did a bypass. I'm suprised Taxquist hasn't tried this stunt for money.

It isn't just Texas that is "tightening up" on these "tests". Here in Tennessee, they are now (at a higher testing cost, of course) hooking up a computer to any vehicle's, 1996 or newer, on board computer system as well as just performing the old "emmissions" test on cars 1995 and older. Now they will be able to tell if anything has been done to the car for the express purpose of getting it to pass these "tests". Also, I read something about a year ago where some New Jersey mandate/regulation was enacted for the solitary purpose of removing all "older" cars from the road and even from people's driveways/land!! Call me a conspiracy theorist but, taking all this in light of the UN's sustainable development goals of everyone living in high-density, urban projects and riding mass/pulic transportation, I get a pretty darned bad feeling about all this "testing" of privately owned vehicles. I wonder what they will eventually start doing with these cars 1996 and newer that they decide have been "tampered" with.....something to make you go hmmm...

It would help to post your emissions results--then perhaps we could identify why your car failed emissions. One possible culprit would be the oxygen sensor (if it has one)--they do wear out, causing an increase in CO emissions. I heard somewhere that the majority of emissions test failures are caused by a worn oxygen sensor. This website might be helpful: www.smogsite.com

At a higher pay grade than mere unionistas or the union lords.

They say only "antiques" are exempt. It does not exclude classics.
