One Of The Air Force's Best Kept Secrets: Civil Air Patrol
Myself | 5/27/02 | Go_USNA

Dear Freepers:
I hope I am posting this in the right spot since I am new at this....
I am a Cadet 1Lt. in the Civil Air Patrol and my squadron is going to be holding a recuitment drive soon... Not many people know about our organization, so this is a quick synopsis:
The Civil Air Patrol is an auxillary of the United States Air Force. Founded in December of 1941, one week before the attack on Pearl Harbor, CAP started under to jurisdiction of the Army Air Forces. During WWII, CAP was credited with sinking two enemy subs and rescuing hundreds of crash surviviors. On May 26, 1948, Congress passed Public Law 557 which made CAP an auxillary in the USAF. They also charged it with a three-fold mission:
1.) A Cadet Program - to motivate and develop the youth of he country to leadership and responsible citizenship through an intrest in aviation.
2.)Aerospace Education - of the general public in support of aerospace power.
3.)Emergency Services - to provide humanitarian assistance in peacetime and domestic disasters as well as civil defense in a National emergency.

This is just a overview of our organization.... Now, I have a question to ask all of you... We, as in CAP as a whole, need to recruit more cadets between 6th grade and 21 years old.... If you all could pass it among yourselves and your associates, I would greatly appreciate it.... We are also looking for Senior Members over the age of 21....If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me on this thread or in my mailbox. Here are two links... One to the Georgia Wing HQ Website and one to the National HQ website.

If you are a current member who is willing to help in recruiting, please leave a message in my box... I really appreciate the time that you have taken to read this.

Take care and God Bless!
Sincerely,
Go_USNA

Some of the best (and worst) times of my life were spent as a cadet in the N.H. Wing... and a Sr. member in Virginia... So, a bump for a great organization...

As a kid just entering his teens, it was just what I needed to keep me out of trouble - add to that the opportunity to learn to fly, SAR Ground Team training and participation, Communications, First Aid/CPR, Military Customs and Drilling, History, Aerospace Education - ne of the fnnest things was encampments at AFBs, where we participated in OJT programs... I'd recommend it for any kid if it's still as good today as it was then... :0)

All I know about CAP is that they exist and do SAR. I will do some research. One of our RACES members is also in the CAP. I'll have to chat him up about that, and see if the kiddo is interested.

RACES or ARES are also service opportunities, if you are so inclined. All it takes is a license, and some basic equipment.

CAP is a great organization. We work with the CAP at the annual Watsonville Airshow. Here is a link to the Squadron 13 web page, and a picture!

A bump from the one-time mascot of a WW II era CAP unit in Oklahoma.

Had 44 hours in my log book before I went to first grade. And could read an aerial map and navigate for my mom and dad before I learned how to read.

I can say with confidence that, at no time did any U-boat ever penetrate the Salt Fork of the Arkansas River.

Bump and good luck to you! The CAP cadet program is still one of the best experiences a young person can have. It got my son going in the right direction (he is now a 68Foxtrot in a Guard unit as well as a CAP Cadet Captain), so I've seen what it can do.

BUMP from a 70 YO Senior member. If I didn't believe in CAP I'd be sitting in my rocking chair telling anyone who isn't interested that the young people have gone to hell. Yes it is a great organization, and all the services have gained from the CAP. Especially us old timers.

My father and two older brothers were involved with the CAP back in the 60's and 70's. back then they were the first people involved in a crash. The ones combing the fields for body parts. It is one best civilian organizations I have ever seen. Totally civilian, but with a complete millitary command structure.
