Clinton touches down in Auckland [NZ]

The former president of the United States has touched down in Auckland, on board the Sultan of Brunei's private jet.

In an escort fit for royalty, a dozen police and secret service agents flanked Bill Clinton's car as he left the airport.

Despite the blustery conditions, Clinton was all smiles for the camera.

The 25 minute drive into Auckland was not without drama for hundreds of motorists who could only look on as police carved a path for the motorcade all the way to the city centre.

Clinton's destination was the Hilton Hotel where ONE News understands he is booked in for four nights.

Director of Operations Paul Evans says Clinton was very relaxed.

"He went over and made sure he said hi to everyone he met," Evans said.

Clinton then retired to his room for some rest before meeting Prime Minister Helen Clark.

Meanwhile, his secret service agents left no stone unturned downstairs and no curtain unchecked.

Once the most powerful man in the world, Clinton will speak in a specially-erected marquee as BMW's special guest to 750 people who paid $800 a head.

Geoff Fletcher, BMW's NZ Managing Director, says he is the world's number one drawcard.

"When we put tickets on sale they sold out in six days," Fletcher said.
