Saudi Pressure on Arafat has Failed
Ha`aretz ^ | May 27, 2002 | Ze'ev Schiff

Posted on 05/26/2002 3:22:55 PM PDT by My Identity

Saudi pressure on Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat, including a personal message from Crown Prince Abdullah, to end the terror strikes of Palestinian suicide bombers in order to bring about a cease-fire, which will then lead to an international conference on the Saudi-Arab peace proposal, has failed. The outcome is that the Saudis cannot uphold their part of the agreement reached by Abdullah and U.S. President George W. Bush.

It is also clear to the Saudis that the movement that Arafat heads, Fatah, and its military wing, are directly linked to the terrorism. In other words, Arafat is involved. Moreover, Arafat gave his word to Prince Abdullah to bring about an end to the activities of the suicide bombers. It is now clear that his promises hold no value. This means that Arafat is not only leading the Americans on a merry dance on this issue, but also the Saudis, the Egyptians and Jordanians.

As part of the U.S.-Saudi agreement reached during the prince's April visit to America, Israel acquiesced to Bush's request to lift the siege on Arafat's Ramallah compound. The Saudis, for their part, undertook to persuade Arafat to help stop the suicide terrorism. They also pledged to pressure Hamas to stop the attacks period. Hamas has received financial aid from Saudi Arabia for years, including funds for the families of Palestinian shaheeds.

The Egyptians and Jordanians were also brought into this agreement. They also promised to help stop the terror operations so that a cease-fire could finally be reached. The Saudis made a similar request of Syrian President Bashar Assad at the Sharm el-Sheikh trilateral summit earlier in the month.

It now turns out that the Saudis actually failed also with the Syrians, who are in fact putting pressure on Hamas not to stop the attacks against Israel and even warn that should these activities cease, Damascus will cut off its financial aid to the militant group.

Bashar Assad and Yasser Arafat are thus working concurrently to scuttle the U.S-Saudi understanding on terrorist activity.

Following the May 7 attack on a Rishon Letzion pool hall, where 15 were killed, the crown prince made an angry telephone call to Arafat. The chairman responded that Hamas and Islamic Jihad were behind the suicide attacks, but it has since emerged that in the following attacks, Tanzim and the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, linked to Arafat's own Fatah, were responsible.

These two organizations have increased their activities since the end of the IDF's Operation Defensive Wall, including a second attack in Rishon on Wednesday.

It is surely clear to Arafat that the escalation in such strikes, especially if there are heavy casualties, will ultimately prompt a harsh response from Israel in the form of a broader military action.

Arafat will use this as an excuse to once again put off any discussion on reforming the Palestinian Authority. Not only is this a way to pull the carpet out from under the plans for such changes, but also from out under plans for a regional or international conference on the Middle East.

The Saudi and Egyptians will thus have to decide whether to return to their positions as observers of the violent events or to put real pressure on Arafat to make good on his promises to the U.S. and its president.

As Hannibal Lechter, quoting Marcus Aurelius said, "Of each thing, ask 'what is it in and of itself?' "

This is not news.

Arafat is a liar and a terrorist, and always has been. Have the Egyptians forgotten they jailed Arafat for an attempted assassination? I think not. They are all Muslims, and they don't care. Arafat may be an a##h*l*, but he's their a##h*l*, and besides, they don't like Jews anyway.

If the author means to imply that now the Saudis and Egyptians will see things more from the Israeli and American point of view, I think he is sadly mistaken.

What does "failed" mean? The Saudis, who have continued to give direct support to Palestinian terrorists, had no desire to make Arafat stop the suicide bombers. What they saw was a propaganda opportunity: to pose as peace makers and to manipulate international opinion to force the IDF out of the Palestinian areas. They succeeded very well in doing that.

Of course, Ha'aretz believes in the Oslo Peace Process, the dictatorship of the proletariat, and the Tooth Fairy. But they should try a little harder to focus on the facts.

Well, maybe Arafat is not responding to settlements but is going through with his Greater Palistine Plan...which is nothing but a part of the Greater Islam plan...conquer everything. You and your Islamics are not going to make it in the long run...sooner or later you'll meet the nuclear genie...like in Pakistan.

Saudi pressures on Arafat! HA HA HA! Sort of like Musharraf's pressures against the jihadis in Kashmir.

Nonexistent; wishful thinking by the powers that be.

What the heck is wrong with these people? How many idioms can I come up with to explain to these morons what their problem is? Just one: A leapord cannot change it's spots.

Arafat is a Jew hating slimeball, bred on the Nazi ideology of his uncle Mufti Mohammed Haj al Husseini. He conspires with his only true friend, Saddam Hussein, who himself is a protege of the Mufti as his uncle was the Mufti's top deputy.

There is no way to reform Arafat. That slimeball should be exiled, he should be jailed, and if anyone ever did deserve to be tried by the ICC, Arafat is on top of that list (although I don't favor the ICC, I only point out the hypocricy of even inventing the ICC only to ignore the most heinous international criminals walking the earth today).

There is only one answer. War. Total war and complete victory. No "deals", no "diplomacy", no "pressure" is going to stop scum like Arafat. He is a thug, a dictator, a terrorist, a mass murderer and a manipulator of fools who believe his lies (and the slimeball is incapable of telling the truth!).

Pretending that the attacks are manageable, that diplomacy can work, that temporary measures can turn into permanent peace, are a fools game. It's time to unleash the Israelis and let them do what needs to be done - to destroy the war making machines that are aligned against them once and for all until their enemies capitulate to peace on their terms. Meanwhile, we've got a lot of work to do ourselves. I don't believe this charade that attacking Afghanistan solved our al queda problem. Our problem is in the madrasses of Saudi Arabia and the synagogues of satan in Iran. We should topple the Saudis and Iraqis and Iranians for what they have done to us not only on 9-11, but many times over the past 30 years including the USS cole, the Marines in Beirut, the Embassies in Africa, the Pan Am flight over Scotland, the TWA 800, the killing our diplomats in Khartoum, the attack on the WTC in 1993, the shooting of our Marine on that TWA flight, the murder of Leon Klinghoffer, and many many more.

Sharon is not reacting to murderers, he's proceeding with his Greater Israel, full speed ahead.

Even if true, then I laugh and scum like Arafat who eat right out of his hand. Dumbasses.

If not for the Arab hatred of Israel and Jewish self determination on the land on which they now live, "Greater Israel" would not even be a feasible ideology. The Arabs can't get over themselves enough to accept defeat and accept Israel as a nation among nations. As such, they open the door to this notion of a "Greater Israel" wider with every attack. Greater Israel can only be a possibility because the adherents to the Pan Arab and Pan Islamic ideologies will not countenence Jewish self determination on their "holy Arab/Islamic soil".

You're absolutely right. The longer we and the rest of the world dance around it, the worse it will get.
