KOVR-13 news item From MyDogDaisy | 2002-05-24 18:37:22 replied
Forgive me for sending this note to you, but I note you posted an item about KCRA. I want to alert FR to something that happened that was reported on KOVR-13 on Thursday 5/23/02 but don't know how to post here. Maybe you saw the item on the news.
It concerned the Navy SEAL, Niel Roberts, who was killed in Operation Anaconda. He is from Woodland, CA. Well, they are building a new high school there. Some of the citizens wanted to name this new school after him. They came to the school board meeting with signatures from many people to request that the school board choose his name. Well, the board listened politely, then voted, and decided to name the school Pioneer High School instead of Niel Roberts High School. The citizens were outraged about this - they said just wait until the school board asks them to vote for a school bond.
I see nothing about this anywhere and fear that it will get buried over this holiday weekend. (snip) Would you put this up on FR so others can see it and maybe get something going on this site? I don't know what the citizens will do, but it seems just so stupid to ignore this hero when a small town like Woodland has this opportunity to really do something to keep his memory alive and honor him for his service and sacrifice.
Forgive me my impertinence in writing to you, but I was just looking for someone to help with this.
Thank you.

The news is breaking mydogdaisys' heart-- so I posted it on breaking news.

Of course we can't name a school after Niel...it violates the Constitutional mandate of separation of school and Patriots! Afterall, the U.S. Department of Edjewkashun has already eliminated disgruntled males/ white supremist, slave owners like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Why then would they want to honor another hero of American Imperialism???

Did they even give a reason? Or did they just sit there and blink their eyes before and after the vote? Looks like some of us may need to start digging up some contact info.
Is there anywhere I can go to find out their "official response" to the public request of the school name?
To: let freedom sing
Hey it is their right to name the school after their forbearers, just like it was the right of a school in bangor, me, to name itself the William Strange Cohen school, after the sterling job he did as klintoon's secdef.
We will live with their wise decisions for ages.
Besides if you named the school after Neil Roberts what would you call the mascot the Americian Warrior, can't do that, that would be politically incorrect.

Thank you to Freedom for helping me out with this. Here is some more info on this disgusting vote: I think the citizens had 1500 signatures on petitions - or else there were 1500 names involved. Didn't get the facts straight in the beginning since I don't live there and wasn't following too closely. Anyway, the school board listened patiently to all the public input, then went ahead and voted just as they had planned from the beginning. I think the final vote was 5 in favor of "Pioneer" and the rest against, but 5 ended up being the majority. One person said that he felt that "Pioneer" was more appropriate since it was a "new" school (get it? Pioneer?) the students would in a sense be "Pioneers", they would have a "Pioneering attitude". Pure BS I think, and seems like an obvious anti-military bias to me. It just seems that a small town like Woodland has its own "hero" which a lot of towns don't or won't (God forbid we lose enough military for each town to have one) but it seems like cities all over are renaming streets, post offices, buildings, and other places after 9-11 heroes. Surely Niel Roberts deserved the same respect. Does anyone here have any idea how to push this? I have sent emails to Drudge, O'Reilly, Alan Keyes, but with the long holiday, I am afraid this will just be old news by the time Tuesday rolls around. Thanks for any help, and God Bless Niel Roberts and our military who keep us safe!

Just goes to show ya beaurocratic insensity is not only at the federal level.

... just like it was the right of a school in bangor, me, to name itself the William Strange Cohen school, after the sterling job he did as klintoon's secdef. For the record, it was named for him about the time he became SecDef, ostensibly for his sterling work as Mayor of Bangor, Congressman and Senator, but actually in an egregious display of sucking up.

Hell I'm just as shocked a California school is going to be named "Pioneer". I mean how un PC and insensitive! After all it was the Pioneers who stole the land from the indigineous people and the Hispanics! Then they they raped nature as well . That cannot be allowed to stand!

Nope it was named for him after he had been secdef for eight months.
They had a real swarmy dedication.
Wonder if they will exam his real record of secdef, or just oh and ah cause he was a rino from me.

Besides if you named the school after Neil Roberts what would you call the mascot ...? They might be called the Seals, if PETA wouldn't object; or they could be called the Heroes, if Libby Davis (the rival city) doesn't protest.
