CLEMSON (AP) — Members of the South Carolina League of the South have placed an image of the South Carolina Sovereignty Flag on a billboard here.

R.L. Owings said he and other members posted the billboard on state Highway 93 near the school to educate Clemson City Council about John C. Calhoun and the flag's symbol of state sovereignty.

City Council asked the group in March to remove the flag from a Calhoun memorial highway marker on U.S. 123.

The state Transportation Department denied the group's permit to fly the flag there and had it removed the day after the council's vote.

Some people say the flag resembles the Confederate flag.

I don't see why all South Carolinians do not embrace this flag - it a sovereign flag of freedom. The only similarities to the Confederate Battle Flag are red and blue, and white stars (but that could be said of 'Ol Glory as well!).
