It is entirely plausible that these a-holes were just inspired by, and not in collusion with, al qaeda.

I seriously doubt that any attack by these people is purely independent and without guidance/backing from Al Quaeda in some form. Islam is a tightly controlling religion. Independent action is out of character and generally not tolerated.
They were inspired by Islam, just like al Qaeda. Same difference.
