Bet that AP still hammered the independent investigator for leaking information...
The media and, consequently, many in the public, automatically blamed the Republicans, saying some operative must have leaked the story in an effort to embarrass the Democrats on the very day that their nominee, Vice-President Al Gore, was making his big acceptance speech at his party's convention in Los Angeles.

Here's another bit "it was all an innocent" gaffe (that served as bait to lambast Republicans):
Cudahy is an unlikely snitch. Appointed to the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in 1979 by President Carter, he served as chairman of the Wisconsin Democratic Party. In 1989, a study of government records by The Associated Press named him the wealthiest federal judge in the country with a net worth of $8.4 million.
