Orange County Fire Alert
myself ^ | 5/13/02 | A Navy Vet

Posted on 05/13/2002 3:47:19 PM PDT by A Navy Vet

A brush fire is working its way through south Orange County just north of Mission Viejo (about a mile from me). I'm watching the flames crest the ridge and are now working down towards homes.

It's located east of Antonio and north of Oso Parkway. The toll road north of Oso is closed.

I was listening to Hugh Hewitt talking about a terrorist strike against a nuclear facility and I saw the cloud and thought San Onofre just went up!

To: Chad Fairbanks;
Looks like it's heading away from me. They're getting a handle on it, but it is close to the new Las Flores homes. They have concrete tile roofs, so should not be a problem.

No, it's probably about 7 miles inland.

La Paz and 5 is a residential area with no open brush spaces around. No need to be concerned.

When I lived there Oso was south of MV, maybe the city center shifted south a bit...oh well. I saw many bad fires when I was growing up there in the 70's. Back then a volunteer F.D. handled El Toro, Mission Viejo and surrounding area. Fires popped up mainly up Trabuco Canyon and into Saddleback Mt. area. They called up the volunteers with a horn that sounded like a sick cow. I don't know how you can stand it there traffic and all. Good luck!

Are any of those mansions affected yet? Isn't that the place where Kobe bought a large mansion - Coto de Caza. Boy those are some nice homes. Hope they douse that fire quick!

Glad to hear it (that you are ok, I mean - bummer about the mansion, though...)

Laguna Niguel is pretty much built out now also. Have family in the area?

Between the excellent response by the ground units, air drops and preventive brush maintenence, no structures are down yet.
