Another argument against women in the military

Posted on 05/11/2002 12:21:01 PM PDT by Garegaupa

I've been reading many interesting discussions concerning women in the military on these boards, but there is one subject that has been little mentioned. I'd like to get some comments on that.

Just so that's clear: I'm against women in the military (in combat positions, at least, but I suppose most positions in the military will become combat positions during a conflict). I agree what has been said about women lacking the necessary physical strength and endurance, being more prone to injuries, disrupting unit cohesion, not being mentally suited for combat and so on.

But, many people say, if a woman can perform as well as a man, shouldn't she then be allowed to serve where she pleases. I still say no. And now we're getting to the point of this post:

I am (both as a Christian and as a man) thoroughly convinced that men should protect and cherish women, and that any man who would willingly send a woman to fight in his stead is a criminal.

Since this view (as far as I can see) hasn't come up too often in the debate over whether women should serve in the military or not, I'm starting to wonder if I'm the only person left on the planet who thinks this is a good principle. Ladies and gentlemen, what are your opinions on this matter?

Best regards, Garegaupa

"You it seems can not distingush between critism of leadership and support of troops. I support our troops. I call into question their civilian leadership.
Get it now?"

When I see a post like this
"It doesn't take a man to be in the Army these days; what, with passing out meals and playing world-cop, as we do."
from PatrioticAmerican
It is NOT aimed at the politicians, it is aimed at the military itself.
And since there are active duty military reading these threads I am not going to let statements like this go by unchallenged.
Don't wonder if I "got it". Wonder if he understands the difference.
Better yet, picture yourself in the position of an active duty troop reading his statement and you have no way of responding.

"Vietnam....in a roundabout way...we did win that war strategically."

From a Must Visit Site
Vipers Vietnam Veterans Page, A Vietnam Veteran & Proud Web Site
About Vietnam

The Vietnam war was the longest in our nation's history. Two American advisors were killed on July 8, 1959, and the last casualties in connection with the war occurred on May 15, 1975, during the Mayaquez incident. Approximately 2.7 million Americans served in the war zone; 300,000 were wounded and approximately 75,000 permanently disabled. Officially there are still 1,991 Americans unaccounted for from SE Asia.

Vietnam was a savage, in your face war where death could and did strike from anywhere with absolutely no warning. The brave young men and women who fought that war paid an awful price of blood, pain and suffering. As it is said: "ALL GAVE SOME ... SOME GAVE ALL"
The Vietnam war was not lost on the battlefield. No American force in ANY other conflict fought with more determination or sheer courage than the Vietnam Veteran.  For the first time in our history America sent it's young men and women into a war run by inept politicians who had no grasp of military strategies and no moral will to win. They were led by "top brass" who were concerned mainly with furthering their own careers, most neither understood the nature of the war nor had a clue about the impossible mission with which they'd tasked their soldiers.  And the war was reported by a self serving Media who penned stories filled with inaccuracies, deliberate omissions, biased presentations and blatant distorted interpretations because they were more interested in a story than the truth! It can be debated that we should never have fought that war. It can also be argued that the young Americans who fought so courageously, never losing a single major battle, helped in a huge way to WIN THE COLD WAR.

There have been a lot of essays on this theme and I obviously agree. It's a bitter pill for many and history takes it's time in judgement. I think this view has legs....at least I sure hope it does.

????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

I did not serve in the USAF for 8 years to get a discount on manicures.I sincerely hope none of the posters on this thread who can not understand that SOME women feel the same call of duty to country that SOME men feel,do not live in my vicinity. If they do, they better keep their mysoginist opinions to themselves when the fan meets the excrement.

I am a veteran, not an angel.I no longer protect and defend jerks for the good of the country.I have paid my dues to this society.I do not need the approval of idiots. But I do not risk my life for your kind anymore. ;>)

I protect my own. Do not get in my way, idiot, lest you find out just how lethal a woman in combat can be.Have a nice life! Elsewhere.

You would probably have to resurrect the common law doctrine of coverture to do that.

Since you have no way of knowing what my character is, I am glad you feel it justified.I did not tolerate disrespect on active duty and I will not do so as a veteran of good standing.

My attitude has been honed much the same way as Vietnam vets got their attitudes.I was not spit on physically, as they were then, but I am verbally spat upon now. My teachers were all Nam Vets and I was taught not to take garbage.

Sleep well.

You do not need me and I do not need you. Life is good.My attitude seems just fine, given the context.

"I will send him to live in Greece before I will let him be drafted!

This is the problem. We have too many people already in this country who see America as a opportunity to build wealth, and nothing more. ....In fact,if you check around and are even half-way subtle with your questions, you will find out this is the dominant attitude with recent legal immigrants and their US-born children. They didn't come here for freedom or to avoid persecution, they came here for the money.

Your right. There is a difference between those who come here for freedom and those who come here for money.

My family came over from Cuba in 1960. After his release as a Bay of Pigs POW, my uncle volunteered for the U.S. Army and later served two Vietnam tours with the Special Forces. As for my nuclear family, we are two brothers and two sisters. Except for our youngest sister, the other three of us are all veterans of the all-volunteer Armed Forces.

"Sometimes the cause you fight for can be lost by the personality you use in the struggle."

That reminds me of what people used to tell me when I came back from Viet Nam.
My "personality" is geared towrds doing everything I can to make sure those in the military
are not subject to the same disrepect I and many others were subject to.
FYI My 1st 6 months back in Chicago in the fall of '69 were spent downtown working and everyday
I had to see and listen to all the anti-military lies and hate as I walked to work from the train station.
So that may give you some insight to my "personality."

BTW: I did spend time in Bandon, at the docks this weekend.
But not eating and drinking.
It was spent with the local Coast Guard crew studying my Radio Wachstanders course
to qualify to stand watches on the base. (It's the same course regular Coast Guard do.)
and on a night training on the 47' boat.
I'm a memebr of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and work and train with them every week in Coos Bay (at the base)
and now in Bandon since the boat here will be here full time starting May 25th till after Labor Day.

"I am (both as a Christian and as a man) thoroughly convinced that men should protect and cherish women, and that any man who would willingly send a woman to fight in his stead is a criminal."

While I don't entirely agree with that statement, I do feel that by nature, a man will be quite protective of any women on the scene, when staring at the face of danger. For this reason, I don't believe that women should be serving in combat. Sensible Executive Officers, regardless of gender, are capable of policing this issue. Politicians and the 'Perfumed Princes' of the Pentagon, have really screwed up in recent years where Military Women are concerned.

You asked for it! That's it...

You were in way over your head.

If you need to think that to feel good about yourself, be my guest. There is no way I am going to provide information that could lead female hating, internet stalkers to my wife.

I think you are an imposter. Thinking that does not "make me feel better about myself". You write like a liberal woman....and your views reflect those of a pro abortion and social engineering sympathetic female.

Patriotic women should be allowed to serve their country in some capacity. I find it difficult to believe the all volunteer military would turn away a talented person willing to serve his/her country. I find it difficult to believe there are no women capable of making a positive contribution to the military in some capacity.
