Poll: Majority of Americans Want Clinton to Retire

A slim majority of registered voters surveyed last week said they would prefer to see ex-President Bill Clinton retire from public life and return to Arkansas rather than host his own TV talk show.

The poll, conducted by the Washington-based Wilson Research Strategies, asked 1,000 registered voters:

"Former President Bill Clinton recently met with NBC television executives to discuss regularly hosting a television interview show. Which of the following statements best represents your view?"

According to a U.S. Newswire report on the survey, 53 percent agreed with the statement:

"Former president Clinton should not go on television, he should move back to Arkansas to retire in order to allow the nation to heal from the wounds of his presidency."

47 percent liked the idea of a Clinton TV show, agreeing with the statement:

"A program hosted by former President Clinton would be interesting and entertaining and I would most likely tune in."

Surprisingly, more women than men objected to the idea of the Clinton show, with 54 percent opposed. 52 percent of men turned thumbs down on the project.

Broken down by political affiliation, Democrats back the idea, with 55 percent telling WRS pollsters they'll watch Clinton's show. Only 15 percent of Republicans like the idea, while 34 percent of Independents say they'd tune in.

The group most likely to make up Clinton's core audience is African-Americans, 69 percent of whom told WRS that they'd watch.

On Friday Clinton told National Public Radio that while he'll continue to listen to proposals for a TV show, he currently spends so much time in public service that there would be no room left in his schedule for such a project. (See: Clinton Still Rejects Bush Election Victory)

WRS surveyed 1000 registered voters between May 5-8. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.2 percent.
