Japan Foreign Ministry Blasts (Their) Consulate Staff in China for Being Too Soft

Thursday, May 9, 2002 at 18:30 JST TOKYO — Japanese government spokesman Kosei Ueno criticized staff at the consulate general in Shenyang on Thursday for allowing Chinese police to act inside the consulate Wednesday without Tokyo's consent.

"Foreign Ministry officials at the consulate could have taken different action if they had properly felt Japan's sovereignty was being infringed on," Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Ueno told a news conference.

The Chinese officers rushed to the premises, seized two men believed to be North Korean asylum-seekers Wednesday at the visa application area of the Japanese consulate in northern China, and took them away.

The Japanese consulate staff who encountered the Chinese officers only asked the police to stop and failed to take "proper" or "resolute" action, such as physical action,Ueno said.

"I think the staff should have taken the incident more seriously," he said. (Kyodo News)

The group of defectors from Communist North Korea, assisted by a clandestine freedom group, split up into two groups the other day in Shenyang, China.

The lucky ones who were more fortunate enough to target the US Consulate for their freedom, made it over the wall and into safety. In their almost assured transit to a concentration camp for certain torture and execution, the poor ones that picked Japan as their portal for freedom, which turned the defectors over, must now be regretting they chose a nation that prizes "Harmony" over "Freedom" (and is the 'pits' when it comes to quick thinking and crisis mgt. action).

This is kind of freaky. It's hard to believe I'm reading it right.

1) The Chinese storm the Japanese consulate; and

2) Japanese government spokesman Kosei Ueno criticized staff at the consulate ...

Why the hell would the Japanese yell at their own people rather than yelling at the Chinese?!

If the Chinese see that they can storm the Japanese consulate with no political fallout, will they march into the US consulate next?

The Japanese of today are wimps! During the Gulf War, their merchant seamen complained about having to sail in "dangerous" waters of the Arabian Gulf where Japan gets most of its oil.

Look at any video clip of Japan and check out how effeminate the young males look. They puff their hair and some even use makeup. Uuhh!

You read it right. Welcome to the world of Asian (especially Japanese) linear thinking and 'logic.'!

Hey Mark, just look at it from the perspective of a PLA soldier or plainclothes Gonganju operative sprinting after freedom seekers from North Korea. At which Embassy are they going to cross over the line and pursue until they capture, and at which Embassy are they going to stop dead in their tracks, respect the diplomatic extraterritoriality, and 'let it go?'

There was a reason for this situation and reaction. China respects the US. It does not respect Japan. Japan, by its response, furthers the disdain and lack of fear China harbors. They will continue to act in this way. Asia only understands and respects force and strength; they despite and hate and exploit weakness.

You see that in action right here.

To be fair, Japan did submit a protest. But, it was too late and weak, IMHO. They defectors will not be turned over. They will be (probably already are) on a flight from Beijing to Pyongyang within 48 hours, will be interrogated, and disposed with.

Japan will look the other way and be happy it did not escalate into a larger international incident or standoff with their giant neighbor.

As I understand it, this could be construed, literally, as an "act of war".
China will do this to Japan but do you really think that China wants to take on the USA just yet?

What you say makes sense, but, to be fair, it doesn't seem to be a style of thinking limited to Japan. Maybe it's a Trilateral style of thinking or something, because I see it elsewhere, too. Just this morning, in another thread, I posted this:

>The Israeli army began to concentrate forces last night alongside the Gaza Strip in preparation for a possible...

[sighs] Go into a biker bar and shoot one of the biker's girl friends. They won't "began" to "prepare" to "possibly" rip your heart out. They'll just stomp you to death.

The whole Western World, confronted by radical Islam which has the balls -- excuse me, the will -- to actually do significant stuff to try and change the world, is acting like the People's Front of Judea from the "Life of Brian" -- i.e., immediately talking about things....

Sooner or later, we have to fire our politicians and just start beating back our enemies...

[IDF prepares for retaliatory strike in Gaza | Israel Insider | 5/9/2002 | Israel Insider]

I hate to compare serious politics to a movie -- even a good movie -- BUT there's a great scene in The Good, The Bad and the Ugly when Tuco is in a bath, and a bad guy comes in and starts telling Tuco how he's going to kill him. Tuco, hiding a gun in the water, just shoots the bad guy. Then Tuco sez: "When you have to shoot, shoot, don't talk..."

It seems to me -- more and more every day -- that the politicians in the Western World are forever going about talking.

I had an interesting conversation with a guy who knows a Japanese National (an engineer). They spoke at length of the Chinese threat. Basically this guy pooh poohed all the expansionist talk. He defied anyone to produce an example in history where China attacked someone outside their borders. I mean big time major attack. There are no examples. The Chinese historically have been defenders, not attackers. They are described as introverted, docile people. The Japanese on the other hand....

Now I am sure the Chinese Leadership has a different view of things. This Japanese guy characterized the Chinese mindset as being one of intrique and deception. That is their strong suit. But as to actually taking an army to foreign soil and going on the attack. Nope. Korea was a defensive move. Remember we pressed our bets to the Yalu and lost the bet.

He views the ongoing Taiwan tensions as simply applying leverage to extract trade and human rights concessions from the US. Anytime we push, they rattle sabres and we back off/give in on the trade/human rights front. Interesting perspective.

In conclusion: Would China go on an overt offensive? It would be totally out of character. Would they pass along the know how to allow a terrorist to detonate nukes in the USA. One would be foolish to discount this possibility. And therein lies the risk.

I'm not going to come down too tough on Japan's actions here in light of our creampuff reaction to our surveylance plane being amost knocked out of the sky, and the resulting circumstances.

The emphasis should be on China's complete disregard for the concept of diplomatic immunity. China is a rogue state. No matter how we wish to think otherwise, it proliferates weapons technology to some of the most uncivilized nations on the planet.

Let's think about that. China is an uncivilized nation. From it's internal dealings with it's own citizens to it's support for other rogue uncivilized nations, it is a pariah nation coiling for it's first major strike. To the extent that China and it's satellites are successful, the civilized world will suffer.

The civilized nations of the world are woefully lacking in avoidance and preparation for the China that is emerging. Evidently we don't consider it an imperitive that the civilize word survive, or at best that the civilized world's youth are not savaged again on the alter of peace, due to the ingnorance of failed leaders.

I'm sure the Dahli Lama (sp?) agrees with that "China never attacks" mode of thought.

Because the staff wussed out. I'd be ripping our guys a new one if they let the Chinese in.

Now, if the Chinese sent a tank and blew down a wall that would be a different story. Apparantly, however, the Japanese staff just let them walk in.

The Mongol Hordes? Perhaps not the sheep-like people of modern China, but they sure went outside borders and screwed up everything all the way to Baghdad.

The Chinese police would be too scared to march into an American consulate, because they knew Americans would not put up with it.

As to the Japanese, that's a different story. I believe even today, Japan still doesn't give citizenship to Koreans who have lived in Japan for decades, after they were brought there as slave labors. The Chinese police, having remove these asylum seekers, might actually be doing them a favor.

Mongol hordes would be more like the present day folks that live around the place in Afghanistan where the Taliban blew up the statues. Coastal Chinese, where the population is centered. No. Never in history.
