No discussion of martial music is complete without the inclusion of the Pipes. Most anything by the Blackwatch will do.

Any of the Russian hymns commemorating Tsar peter's victory over the Swedes at Poltava. Imagine living in a world in which the Swedes were a superpower?? We have Tsar peter to thank for that vision of reality passing away.

ANOTHER OLD SOLDIER by C&W singer Mark Collie written for his father
He was haggard and gray and he walked with a limp
He'd have him a smoke and he take him a sip
Born in the summer of 24
Son of the vetreran of the first world war
He entered the service in forty one
And didn't come home till the fighin' was done
Wearing a ilver star on his chest
He was proud to sat he was one of the best
Chorus
Twenty one guns the stars and stripes
An eye full of tears and a heart full of pride
When you hear that distant bugle play
Another old soldier fades away
Another old soldier fades away
He took a bullet in the hip outside Inchon
But he was back in the field by fifty one
Said Douglas MacArthur was a man among men
And Harry Truman was a horse's end
He never questioned his Uncle Sam
When they sent him into Vietnam
Then they brought him home in seventy three
On 100% disability
He loved his country with all his might
Right up until the day he died
In a crowded ward at the local VA
Another old soldier fades away
Chorus
Twenty one guns the stars and stripes
An eye full of tears asnd a heart full of pride
When you hear that distant bugle play
Another old soldier fades away
Another old soldier fades away

Down Where The River Bends by Dr. Ralph Stanley:
Hard to keep tears out of my eye
This could be our last goodbye
Your country calls you to defend a great land
So you do your part just like a man.
Chorus:
Down where the river bends
With God's help we'll meet again
Under the same old sycamore tree
Proud of each other In the land of the free.

50,000 Names Carved in The Wall- George Jones. Not really a military song, more a patriotic song, seems appropriate this close to Memorial Day though.

"Tenting Tonight", a Civil War song.
We'll be tenting tonight on the old campground...
Give us a song to cheer...
Our weary hearts, on the old campground...

Men of Harlich-made even more famous by the movie "Zulu".
Marching through Georgia
I watched a Army company march by our barracks in a driving rainstorm and they were singing "Anchors Aweigh".

That Dixie recording reminded me of my days at Ole Miss....I doubt they play it anymore.

Bless you! What a wonderful memory that must be. Tears come to my eyes when I recite the Pledge of Allegiance, so you can imagine what the military songs do to me...I do not believe there is anything glamorous or beautiful about war, so the men who take up that grim task so far from comforts of home and comforts of love in defense of our nation--so our children can sleep in peace--have all my admiration, including those in my own family.
