(CBS) In the Persian Gulf, in late July 1996, American warships, a full complement of military hardware, and nearly 4,000 Marines, sailors and SEALs, were praying they could pull off the mission of their lives. They had been assigned to grab the man, who before September 11th, had killed more Americans than any other terrorist.
His name is Imad Mugniyah, and U.S. intelligence believed they had tracked him to the waters of the Persian Gulf, aboard a merchant ship, the Ibn Tufail.
Marine commander John Garrett helped plan this top-secret mission to take down the ship, and take Mugniyah into custody. This is the first time he has ever talked about it publicly. In fact, no one involved has ever talked about it, until now. Dan Rather reports.
If were going to take down a ship, as in this case, you would like to have some sort of scare factor, a fly-over, low down, by jets, he says. Maybe even a strafing run or something off to the side. Simultaneously accompanied by a boarding of the vessel from the air which could be helicopters hovering and then fast-roping down to a spot thats been picked on the deck

That is because he was too busy pulling his pud.
This pig needs to be tried for war crimes or something. Thousands of Americn and others were instantly and needlessly incinerated on 9-11.
I hope he sees all the blood on his hands.

Apologies All, I misread (hey, it is early here on the left coast). I thought it said (paraphrasing) he had a chance to pull the trigger on OBL..not the other guy. I saw the mention of 9-11 and ran with it.
Of course, it still applies, but not here. So let me re-state my point:
That is because he was too busy pulling his pud.

I thought they had someone posted but inadequately armed against that kind of attack. Also, there was not a sufficient barrier to prevent a truck bomb. Maybe someone has the full picture. I am just trying to recall details from the news.

The pressing need now is for us to figure out how to sway a nation of non-thinkers to think for a change, for their own sake and for the sake of future generations of Americans and for the sake of mankind itself. That is a formidable task you are proposing. Admirable but difficult at best. How can a population consisting of ever increasing numbers that do not share our language, history, culture, ideals and political concepts be expected to care or participate. How would you sway the thinking or change attitudes of the masses that are here to perpetuate the culture, traditions and lifestyles of their country of origin, only in grander style and in many cases with the taxpayers footing the bill.
The only change they are interested in is the one of changing our existing culture to one more compatible to the one they are accustomed

I was talking about normal marine tactics. An army Lt. colonel who was in Korea along side the Marines in the Pusan perimeter, said it drove him nuts when he was able to walk almost into a Marine camp before he was detected.

Puhleeezzze - somebody - anybody put Bill Clintoon in JAIL where the low life deserves to be. The worthless S/H has no spine. On the morality ladder he is lower than whale poop and whale poop is on the bottom of the ocean.

RobbyS, The Marines posted guards, but the guards were prohibited from putting ammunition in the weapons. This was a case of the State Dept. overruling the military.

The military really should return to the "ask forgiveness, not permission" protocol. Not likely, though - too many politicians in uniform.

Perhaps Mr. Clinton will discuss THIS on his talk show!

He probably would do a show on this, just to explain how people didn't understand what he was really trying to do.

"When will it be enough for him [Clinton] to account for all that he did and didn't do?"About at the same time the elevator door swings open at the basement floor of Hades.

What a load of road appples. No kidding. I am getting a little fed up with these new stories coming out about all the screw ups during the Klinton years regrading terrorism and foreign policy. Of course, the media and the Klinton koolaid drinkers come out to mitigate the damage. Its amazing how much can be kept from the public.

Just saw on 60 minutes II. In 1996 the military had the SOB that orchastrated the Beruit Marine Barracks attack in their cross hairs and did'nt pull the trigger.
Report made me so mad I could spit. Don't know what else to say.
Of course they gave Clinton a puff, it's 60 minutes. I'm sure you're right, but how in the heck COULD such a report be a puff piece for Klintoon?
