Technicalities Hold Up Prisoner Deal

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) _ Minor technical details regarding the transfer of six Palestinian prisoners from Yasser Arafat's besieged compound still need to be worked out, but the men are expected to be moved later Wednesday, Palestinian officials said.

The prisoner transfer would pave the way for the Palestinian leader's release from months of Israeli confinement at his headquarters in the West Bank town of Ramallah.

Palestinian Cabinet Minister Saeb Erekat told The Associated Press the transfer arrangements were largely in place, but that some details concerning the safety of the prisoners and other issues were still unresolved. Erekat said it was "possible" the prisoners would be transferred later Wednesday, while another Palestinian official said the transfer would take place by nightfall.

The prisoners are to be held in the West Bank town of Jericho, under British and U.S. supervision.

The six wanted men have been holed up with Arafat and about 300 people since Israel's invasion March 29. In a lightning trial at the compound with Palestinian police as judges, four were convicted of killing Israeli Cabinet minister Rehavam Zeevi in October. The other two are Ahmed Saadat, leader of the radical PLO faction that carried out the assassination, and Fuad Shobaki, alleged mastermind of a Palestinian arms shipment intercepted by the Israeli navy in January.

For Bush to to send Powell to talk with him after that was outrageous.

Yes and no.

Yes, because Arafat's nothing but a lying, pubic-faced, merdering terrorist, and nobody should ever have talked to him in the first place.

No, however, because the world (including the U.S.) has been talking to him for years, which serves as diplomatic recognition. If one is trying to negotiate a way out of a war, one has to talk with somebody, and Yasser's been the man up to now.

In the Karin A case, Arafat didn't break a deal, he just lied. Leaders lie all the time about embarassing military incidents; Eisenhower lied about the U-2 incident.

Now Yasser's breaking a deal that should have been easy to keep. If he can't keep an easy deal, there's no reason to go any further with him.

Of course, the hard part about that is finding any other Palestinian with whom to negotiate.....

It may be true that Arafat is bought and paid for, but the Administration does not have to play with him or the Arabs.

Now, I guess, we will find out just what George W. Bush means when he said "you are either with the terrorists or against them."

In the next few months, we will find out what kind of man is in the White House. I happen to believe that he means to keep his word... but foreign diplomacy is a minefield of smoke and mirrors. Trying to figure out where Bush is going (and I have my ideas) without being on the inside is guess work at best.

You're right. This "reneging" is news a few days old. The media won't pick up on it because it shames Arafat, the "David" to Sharon's "Goliath."

Bush has given the green light to Israel...Notice that they haven't left and continue their "mop-up" exercise....

At the same time, Bush has handed Arafat a shovel who promptly began digging his own grave....

Additionally, this gave our psuedo-ally's the Saudi's a diplomatic out plus appeased the Euroweenies that all that could be done has.....

End result, Arafat will be gone...The Arab nations will be left with little to gripe about and hopefully meaningful peace negotiations can then ensue....

This will leave the US positioned to attack Iraq...

Don't ever think this is a ad-hoc policy in the W.H. I can assure you that they have a decision matrix posted on the wall of the situation room with numerous advisors plotting possible outcomes and scenarios. Dubya is surrounded by some of the best in the world..... Plus note: If we cannot predict an outcome, we have the resources and assests in place to manually manipulate ....
