Majlis studies bill on new Special Economic Zones
Tehran, April 30, IRNA -- The Parliament is expected to approve the
general outlines of the bill on establishment special economic zones
by May 21, Tuesday edition of the English-language newspaper `Iran
Daily' said quoting a member of the Majlis Economic Commission Iraj
Nadimi.
Nadimi said that the bill, which is being debated by the Majlis,
will encourage domestic production, establish trade ties with foreign
countries, improve the economy, help bring in new technology, promote
exports, generate jobs, attract investment and transit of goods, Iran
Daily quoted the Persian daily `Aftab-e Yazd' as writing on Monday.
Given the State Expediency Council's approval of investment by
expatriate Iranians, he said that the role of special economic zones
in the domestic economy is promising.
To speed up the process of establishing such zones, the Majlis
trade policies committee held its first meeting which was also
attended by members of the economic, social, national security,
energy, plan and budget, industries and mines as well as legal and
judicial commissions, said Nadimi.
He noted that representatives of free trade zones, Iran's Customs
Administration and the Economy and Finance Ministry were also present
at the meeting.
The lawmaker said that the meeting discussed the distinction
between special economic zones and border markets, cooperatives and
free trade zones, their responsibilities and impacts on the economy.
He conceded that foreign investment will be needed to set up
special economic zones.
