How many respondents have children?
What age group are we talking about?
And the problem with the concept is?

This thread presently is long on "knee jerk" and totally devoid of thought.
There might have been a better way to accomplish the check, but I like the basic precaution.
And I firmly believe that as a local issue, community standards should prevail.
Why should the pervs in LA or NY (or their exports) decide?

Personally, I think it's the parent's responsibility, certainly not the schools... But then, I'm weird, so...

The dress code would reflect the community standards not these actions of a vice principal.Tell how lifiting the skirts of school girls furthers the education process. Isn't it the demented actions of an out of control person who shouldn't be allowed within the walls of a school without an escort, that are in question here?

let's turn this around, shall we ?

if my otherwise well-behaved son showed up for the prom
only to be met at the door by some wannabe nazi prick
demanding to see his underwear, or *gasp* lack thereof,
i'd be sorely tempted toward sanctioning my kids decking
of said (likely lascivious) perv.

A. Its the parents job to parent B. Having underwear at the dance isn't going to prevent any hanky panky afterwords.

What "community" has as its "standard" procedure the employment of some pervert who checks everybody's underwear at the door? San Francisco?

To brand others arguments as "knee-jerk", is to diminish your own argument, since you do not refute the other's opinions with logical arguments. My position is that this is entirely an inappropriate abuse of power. This vice-principal decided to create a new dress code, without approval of the local school board. Clearly, beyond her scope of authority. Secondly, the school board, in its wisdom, realized that there is no legal way to enforce what underwear that students wear to dances, or to school. No court in the nation would tolerate this encroachment on personal liberty. This is actually very insightful, in that, it indicates the mindset of the PC left these days, in that they think they can make, and enforce the most ridiculous of laws and regulations. Don't get me wrong, if these girls began to expose their bare-bottoms, they would then be in violation of public indecency laws, which are already on the books.

Like in private, and before the event?

"a line of people and the vice principal ... And she was literally lifting up their skirts and embarrassing them in front of everyone else,"

If the community standard is to lift up teen girls skirts in the presence of the boys in the school, then they are a community of perverts. (I like it)

I notice that community standards has not managed to make a rule against thong underware but is totally capricious and arbitrary. Those are totalitarian community standards.

The community has no right to tell me what kind of under garments to wear. There may be exceptions depending on what kind of outer clothing is used e.g. a see through blouse. But to do a general underwear check is absolutely not within the school's scope or power.

You people think this is something new. It's not. When I was in High School in the 60's and 70's there were some girls who wore short skirts and NO underwear! They were rather popular to say the least. And lest you think I grew up in a big city. My hometown had fewer than 20,000 residents. The entire county only had about 80,00 in population.

Ridiculous. This is not acceptable. Of course, if the girls were wearing dresses that didn't make the thing (or the thong) an issue, then the problem wouldn't be one.
