Thong-Wearing Teens Kicked Out Of Dance

A group of parents are calling for the resignation of Rancho Bernardo High School's vice principal, claiming she enforced underwear checks at a school dance, 10News reported.

The dance occurred Friday and vice principal Rita Wilson turned away girls who were wearing thongs, the parent said.

Kim Teal is among the several parents angry with Wilson (pictured, right).

"First thing (my daughter) said when she got into the car was, 'Mom, it was horrible last night. You have to fight this,'" Teal told 10News.

According to parent Alane Garvik, girls who arrived at the dance wearing short skirts were immediately asked: "What kind of underwear do you have on?"

When Garvik's daughter red-facedly announced that she was wearing thong underwear she was told to "go home and put on appropriate underwear," according to Garvik.

Teal's daughter made it in and claims to have witnessed faculty lifting the skirts of girls to assure that the offending underwear was going nowhere near the dance floor.

"Well, I just saw ... a line of people and the vice principal, Mrs. Wilson, she was checking to see what the girls were wearing under their dresses. And she was literally lifting up their skirts and embarrassing them in front of everyone else," one student told 10News.

Parents and students have placed the blame on Wilson, for spearheading the thong underwear checks, even though there is nothing in the school dress code against them.

"It's not their right to know what kind of underwear these kids have," Garvik told 10News.

10News contacted school officials, who all declined to go on camera. But Principal Paul Gentle did say that he is "looking into the situation."

Parents are now asking for Wilson to resign.

Gentle said that even while enforcing the school dress code, it is not proper procedure to ask students what they are wearing underneath their clothes.

He told 10News that he plans to meet with parents sometime this week.

Vice principal lifts skirts to do underwear check at school dance

She's getting paid for this!?
In high school I did it for free, as a hobby :-)

Once the Skirt reaches a certain level, that act of dancing itself, makes the underwear Outerwear

Underwear as outerwear is already the case. There is a High School near the grocery store I frequent and as such many High School students shop there. I've noticed that the "in style" fashion for girls of that age is to wear those ridiculously low cut "low-rider" jeans with the tops of their thongs hanging out over the tops of their pants. The guys are just as guilty wearing sagging pants that practically fall to their knees.

It is a wonder anyone can learn anything in school these days!

"What a person wears on the outside could be quite distracting and irresponsible for someone of a certain age. However, what the person is wearing underneath those particular dress-code approved clothing be it granny panties, thongs, or nothing, is not the schools business."

Surely a person as bright as yourself understands the basic physics involved here. When a girl in a short skirt starts dancing, what is likely to happen? Yep, the laws of nature dictate that what is UNDER that skirt is likely to become visible. Would you be willing to extend your "distracting and irresponsible" clause to include anything that is publicly visible?

What kind of mother buys thong underwear for her daughter? What kind of mother allows her daughter to go to a dance in a short skirt wearing thong underwear?

Exactly. Have these people never been to a high school dance? During the slow dances just where do you think those boys hands will end up?

I don't necessarily agree with how the VP handled this. But she's right that teenage girls have no business wearing short skirts and thong underwear to a school function (or any function for that matter).

If that's prudish, count me in.

RE: Schools' legal responsibility to act "in loco parentis"

My judgment?

Too much loco, not enough parentis.

Perhaps the father of a couple of sons out there might let you know what his sons say about and think about girls wearing underwear like that. First of all what are you teaching your sons, they should not be thinking about
my girls underwear,
Now tell me, since you are so proud of your decison to buy your teen daughters string bikini underwear, would you be willing to wash them and then hang them on the outside cloth line to dry? Out where the neighbors can see them?
First of all underwear is private If I would hang my boxers why not hang the thongs,
Secondly what difference does it make what underwear someone wears,
is it boxers or briefs, how about nunyabidnes.(none of your business)
And by the way the girls wear thongs, with certain clothes to hide panty lines, and for comfort
the same as I wear briefs to workout, and boxers for everyday,
no difference as far as I can see
Would you be willing to suggest theses as a gift to anyone who asked you what they could get the girls for thier birthdays?
I wouldn't want anyone to buy me underwear why would I suggest it as a gift.
When I dress in my work clothes, with hammer and hammer hanger, I feel like a carpenter. When I put on a suit and visit somene in the hospital, I feel like visiting clergy. When I have on my orange and am carrying a rifle through the woods in the fall, I feel like a deer hunter. And when I put on my Sunday suit and stand behind the pulpit, I feel like a preacher. How do you think your girls feel when they put on a string for underpants? A lady? Alas

How do my girls feel when they put on thongs, probably no
different than when they wear grannies, or french cut, or what ever.
Underwear does not make the person the person does.
your holier than though view, works well for Islam and their burkas,
but hear we allow in our society to dress the wat they want., Not based on what a few people think they should wear

no one is telling these girlies they can't wear thongs or short skirts. they are just saying you cannot wear them to a H.S. dance. get over it. there are rules in life, follow them or not, but there is no constitutional right to be bottomless at a HS dance!

who'da thunk there'd ever be a 330+ thread on FR about HS girls' southern undergarments that didn't get yanked ??

I have noticed that one FReeper however (who posted several times in the first 200 or so replies of this thread) has achieved the legendary No current Freeper by that name status.

Hint, hint, Check out codebreaker's status. Oops!

This is neither strictly a 4th nor 1st Amendment issue, but rather a form of sexual abuse. Raising any woman's (or girl's) skirt in public for any purpose would certainly be a violation. If the article had stated that the school had simply banned short skirts then it would have become a 1st Amendment issue that the school most likely would have won. Barring a short skirt ban, had the vice principal chosen to take any girl wearing a short skirt into a locker room for a quick underwear check it would have been a 4th Amendment issue that the school may have won.

As is I think the school is screwed.

Posting pictures from a teenage porno site violates the FR posting guidelines. Codebreaker is on a one day suspend.

your stepping in on several questions Alas had asked me, and you know what
it is not the role of the school, to check if my kid is wearing a thong or not
I think you missed the point by a mile, he was basically saying
my daughters were of questionable virtue for wearing a thong,
Warning to anyone, don't ever tell this DAD how to raise his kids,
Because it doesn't take a village, it takes a parent.

Yes, but ONLY if such was actually demonstrated by the girl(s) in question. I would give them the benefit of the doubt. As I posted earlier, I've been to many, many dance clubs in my day where many young ladies where wearing very little, and I have yet to see thongs bouncing out from underneath skirts. Can and does it probably happen? I suppose, but I've never seen it. If you have, let me know where you go :-).

this is the only part of your post that i was addressing. people can wear what they want, but HS students are not constitutionally entitled to wear what they want to a HS dance.

understandable, dress codes should be excpected.
but not inspected, lifting a skirt at a high school dance is a little over the top
