Close Quarters Defensive Skills

Ian Kinder

Head Instructor, Live Safe Academy

Most lethal force encounters are spontaneous, close range (5' or less), high stress; low light events that happen within a very short amount of time. CPL holders need the skills and mindset necessary to prevail against such an attack. Having unarmed defensive skills to protect yourself from an immediate threat and to be able to create an opportunity to gain distance and draw your firearm are essential to personal safety. Students will learn to move to advantage, shoot while moving, and shoot at extreme close range when gaining distance is not possible. Dry and live fire practice and partner training will be used. To ensure maximum safety, partner training will be conducted with inert, solid plastic training aids like red guns, red knives, and other safe training tools.

Equipment requirements: Firearm, eye and ear protection, three magazines/speed loaders w/pouches to carry the magazines and/or speed loaders, a serviceable holster*, and 250 rounds of ammunition.

Protecting Your Freedom when Protecting Your Life

Michigan Law and the Use of Less-Than-Lethal and Lethal Force

Gary C. Bengtson, PC

Attorney at Law

Basic CCW training covers some of the rudimentary points regarding the use of lethal force. This class takes up where that training leaves off. Failure to understand the full range of legal force options can lead to the premature use of lethal force. We will expand on the concept of using less-than-lethal force to stop a less-than-lethal threat, as well as give an in-depth review of Michigan law and case precedent regarding both less-than-lethal and lethal force. Finally, will examine various hypothetical situations to help class-members fully comprehend the various requirements placed on them when resorting to the use of force.

Equipment requirements: Pen and paper for notes; food and beverages as desired.

Instructor: Gary Bengtson is an attorney practicing in Ann Arbor. He has litigated numerous gun-related cases, and has represented clients in CCW denial appeals. He is also on the NRA attorney referral list and teaches the legal portion of the CCW training offered by Live Safe Academy.

Lunch: 12 noon

Combat Shooting Methods for Real World Encounters

Louis M. Chiodo

The goal of this firearms training seminar is to instruct the participants in time-tested, relevant, and realistic combat shooting methods that have proven to work in the dynamic, high-stress environment of close-quarters combat. These combat shooting methods have been validated in the conditions present in combat not just on the range. The seminar will begin with an explanation of why, when and where target-focused shooting is applicable in a classroom environment. Then the remainder of the seminar will be devoted to developing target-focused shooting skills on the range.

The range portion of training will focus on developing skills in the following areas:

The Fighting Platform
Combat Ready Position to the Firing Position
Close-quarters Ready Position to the Firing Position
Holstered Position to the Firing Position
Holstered Position to the Close-quarters Firing Position

Equipment requirements: Each participant will need to have eye and ear protection, a minimum of three magazines/speed loaders and pouches to carry the magazines and/or speed loaders, a serviceable holster, and 350 rounds of ammunition.

Instructor: Lou Chiodo is the founder of GUNFIGHTERS Ltd. which is a company dedicated to providing instruction in combat shooting methods to the law enforcement and military communities. He has taught combative arts and is an active martial artist with over 37 years experience. If I had my CPL and didn't have to pay the rent, I'd sign up.

From what I've heard, these trainers don't train average citizens very often either. They usually only train cops.

Dang, that seems like a deal too good to pass up for someone from Michigan. If I could find a flight for under 200 bucks and get the days off of work I'd do it myself seeing how Michigan accpets my Washington permit.

I'm not sure if out of state CPL's are accepted for this event. From what I've read here, I doubt it. It wouldn't hurt to ask MCRGO though.

The Livingston Gun Club is about 6 miles from where I used to live, and it's about an hour drive from either Detroit Metro Airport, Bishop Airport in Flint, or Capitol City in Lansing.
