Though it was more than a quarter-century ago, Catherine Hoey said she remembers the incident clearly. Returning from an evening out, she and her husband, John, peeked into their daughters' room.
She said they were stunned to find a man in bed with Susan, who was not yet 13. He was the baby sitter, she said, a trusted family friend and priest at a neighboring Roman Catholic parish in Vallejo. His name, said Catherine Hoey, is Vincent Brady.

I see something seriously wrong with this picture. Would most normal parents just walk into the other room? No, they would drag the offender from the bed, knock him to the ground, and then call the police right there. What kind of parents are these that won't protect their own child?
Perhaps they had been told "it is wrong to be judgemental."
Seriously, it is absolutely not understandable.
Shock and anger were overcome by denial, which protected all of them.
