My firewall goes NUTS when I go to Free Republic
gitmo

Posted on 04/27/2002 7:19:19 AM PDT by gitmo

I have noticed that whenever I go to the Free Republic, I begin getting Intrusion Alerts from my Norton Firewall. I know these things pop up now and then on the web, but it seems very concentrated on the FR site. I've checked a few of them out, and they aren't coming from the Free Republic.

I'm not a Black Helicopter type, but I can't help wonder if someone is trying to "check up" on Freepers.

Has anyone else noticed a lot of intrusion attempts when they are Freeping?

Yes. They come and go.

Last year in April, the Chicoms were hitting me everytime I got on FR. Matter of fact, there was two or three threads on the subject back then.

In this day and age, if you don't have anti-virus or a good firewall (hardware and software), you're toast.

How did you trace it to the ChiComs?

Don't take this the wrong way, but I am glad to see others are having problems. I thought I was being singled out. I'm not paranoid, someone really is after me ;). I think it is all a part of the vast Left Wing conspiracy. :)

Can you say IP spoofing?

Would someone mind very much explaining to me what a firewall is, how it works, and where I can get one?

How did you trace it to the ChiComs?

If you have the IP address where the attacks originated, then once and reverse-resolve it to a domain name. Once one has a domain, one can look it up and find out who owns it.

Download thou a piece of software named "Visualroute." Then thou can know where intrusion attempts originate. Said software has a free trial period, then becomes partially crippled until the appropriate amount of sheckles are delivered to said software developers.

So let it be written, so let it be done......

Run Adaware after you leave FR.

I seem to catch spy worms whenever I've been clicking on links here.

I don't notice my firewall becoming active, but I do find that, when I move to a thread, a request to place a cookie pops up on my screen. It's never a FR cookie, it's usually and advertising cookie from (I'm thinking) the site where the article was taken from. Anyone know about this?

Most of the activity you see is likely coming from the web sites that are hosting the photos that people post in threads.

Now, if you can tell if a series of ports are being probed from a single IP address, then maybe you're being singled out.

Personally, after researching the log from my firewall, I don't see anything particular about FreeRepublic except for the linked photos.

You can have fun at HackYourself.com if you want to put your Norton firewall to the test. Gibson Research is good too.
