he was supposed to be deposed June 6

I smell a 'bolt-out' here.
If the Pope was smart he'd put Law in of the Swiss Guards' laundry.

80 years ago, the Protestants who built Massachusetts decried the catholic immigrant influx. I think they were right.

The Know Nothing Movement, of which you would have been a proud member, was responsible for the establishment of the public school system, the bane of our country and both Catholic and Protestant children.

I understood the comment this morning on FNC was that when Law went to Rome, the prosecutor would have a hard time bringing him back for depositions. In other words he would be under Rome's protection........and that is the reason for the move. I doubt that he will ever come back.......will claim he is too sick to travel.

FNC was speculating -- not proven fact, yet. Also, there has been much debate on whether Law is indictable under the law (no pun intended). The victims' lawyer, as is always the case, has done a lot of rumbling (and I don't blame him), but RICO charges may be a stretch here.

I agree with other posters that this is most definitely a deep demotion, and Law will be kept tightly under the thumb in the Vatican, so that he may not further scandalize the Church by proclaiming his innocence. I also doubt that the Pope would challenge civil authority if Law is indicted. He will most probably be returned to the U.S. if that happens.

Well you certainly have a high opinion of the Catholic Church, it's members and the pope. So the entire Catholic hierarcy was complicit, knowing and allowing of child abuse of our children. Have you always had this high opinion of the Catholic Church and Catholics or have you just been enlightened recently? (sarcasm off)

Maybe you don't speak Vaticanese, but he has done all these things. Transferring Law to Rome is not a promotion. It is, rather, as has been said, a means of incarceration and a striping of any authority.

This may be a moot point because this disciplinary move by the Vatican may encourage the civil authorities to do their duty and bring charges against Cardinal Law.

Why do some Protestant Conservatives have such hatred for Roman Catholics?

Protestant comments in the media have been *very* restrained about the scandal w/in Catholicism. The problem is that the media coverage is being "spun" by some as "Catholic bashing."

Learn some history - Protestants have been decrying Catholics since the 1770s - yes, we were here! In fact, there were quite a few Catholic regiments during the Revolutionary War.

Nowadays, the place is full of corruption and lawlessness. The pilgrims would be disgusted.

The Pilgrims were the forefathers of the lovely Salem Witch Burnings, a corrupt event that involved the murder of quite a few of their fellow Protestants. The entire world is full of corruption and lawlessness and it disgusts most of us, so what is your point?

As someone else mentioned - read "The Rascal King" by Jack Beatty it is about the life and political times of James Michael Curley. One of the first things Curley did as mayor was to take the Irish Catholic washerwomen (one of whom was his mother) off of their knees. They had to wash floors in all the state offices on their knees because the Protestant elected officials would not allow them mops.

I'm ashamed to admit I'm a member of the Catholic Church. As of now, I'm rethinking my whole affiliation.

Judas was a bishop. And who picked him?

Acts 1

16   Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.

17   For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry.

18   Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.

19   And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood.

20   For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take.

Especially given the hysterical reaction we are seeing here.

Fox News is reporting that the Vatican may want to shield Law from being deposed in the many lawsuits against the Archdiocese. If this is the case, and this actually happens, the Vatican will set the Church back to square one as far as credibility goes. There have been reports all along that there are those in the Vatican that the Church should ALWAYS have fought the accusers more aggressively, refused to pay settlements, etc. There are definitely many in positions in the Vatican who have no clue about the American legal system, why Americans are litigious, and how outraged the laity in the U.S. will be if Law is whisked away and sheltered in the Vatican.

Sounds like speculation to me at this point.

This sounds like very irresponsible speculation to me. I am sure that the pope will defer to the civil authorities. Remember, he did call this a "crime."

The Boston Herald quoted unnamed church officials saying Pope John Paul II would move the embattled archbishop to an undetermined post before a scheduled deposition of Law in a suit against the Boston archdiocese.

Does this mean that Law will NOT be testifying in the deposition? As the "Church Lady" would say: How conveeeenient.

The enormity of such a foolish position can not be overstated.

Protestants in Massachusetts "built" by burning people at the stake in Salem. Proud of that, I guess. Jonatron's words were utterly hateful and shameful. Don't bring yourself down to his level. Protestants did a lot more than burn people at the stake in colonial America. God bless.

And you may be correct in your speculations, I don't know.

What I do know is this - why did almost everyone cry for Law's resignation/reassignment immediately, starting yesterday, and now that it has been done, why are people still unhappy that he won't be here in June for the deposition? I'm kind of stunned and can't figure out what the heck people want.

We forget, Cardinal Law DID submit his resignation two weeks ago and it was not accepted by JPII. I believe that now that the Cardinals have had their meeting in Rome, and the facts are all out there, JPII knows that Cardinal Law is hurting the faith and cannot remain as head of the flock.

Cardinal Law loved his position here - it comes with a lot of clout and exposure... the worst thing that could have happened to him has happened. He'll spend the rest of his life in obscurity and he'll live with the cries of all those little boys in his head.

>>Why do some Protestant Conservatives have such hatred for Roman Catholics?<<

For the same reason some (not most, not all) Roman Catholics have hatred for Protestants.

Well I hate to be the one to break the news to you but the ship is not going down. The ship may have temporarily gone off course but with the grace of God the rudder will be "righted." And the ship will continue it's bon voyage. You see that's what makes us Catholics special. For 2000 years we have overcome every obstacle made by man, nature and Satan. And we will conquer this evil and go on to become an even better congregation and faith. As a Catholic Marine I can think of no better time to say "Semper Fidelis."
