A Different Middle Eastern Territorial Dispute

23 April 2002

The Arab News internet-based news service and gateway reported on a press conference by victims of human rights violations committed by the Algerian-backed Polisario terrorists against Moroccans. The Polisario are separatists demanding partition of the Saharan desert between Morocco and Algeria, as put forward by Algeria, while Moroccan leaders have consistently rejected any land for peace deal with the terrorists.

The Polisario have been using intimidation and terrorism to “persuade” Moroccan Sahrawis (residents of the Sahara) to agree to the Algerian proposal of partition. As part of this campaign of terror, according to the spokesman for the Amsterdam-based association of the victims of the Polisario, Moroccans are imprisoned illegally in camps in southwestern Algeria and tortured. The Polisario were accused by the spokesman of “massacres and inhuman violations, perpetrated in the separatists´ prisons against the Moroccan Sahrawis who reject the idea to partition the Moroccan Sahara or sever it from the homeland, Morocco.” The Algerian-backed Polisario do not hesitate to use the liquidation of persons, groups and tribes as methods of forcing acceptance of the idea of partition of the land, said Dahi Akadi, Chairman of the association of victims of Polisario terrorism.

Akadi also stated that Algeria was directly involved in the terrorism against Moroccan subjects who oppose secession from the kingdom. Algeria, Akadi said, extends its backing at the economic, political and security levels. Furthermore, the Algerians used the increased Polisario terrorism against loyal Moroccans, instigated by the Algerians themselves, to call for partition in order to bring peace to the region, according to the Chairman.

Unlike the great attention paid to the situation in Israel, the Polisario terrorist offensives and human rights violations have attracted little international attention. Spokesman for the victims’ association, Mohamed Lamine Yahia, said that they had reported the violations to Amnesty International, asking that the Polisario leaders be labeled “war criminals.” As of yet, to no avail.

Hello, Amnesty International?

Hel-loooooooo!

Is this on the up and up? (Somehow I just don't automatically trust ANY arabs claiming victim status lately.)

If so, what's with the Algerians? They are suffering from a vicious terror campaign directed against their government, and they turn around and support another group of terrorists?!

Only Muslims would kill each other over a sand dune. The entire continent needs to wiped clean for a do-over.
