THE Canadian military has been accused of excessive "squeamishness", after recalling a sniper hailed for his bravery in Afghanistan to face a court martial for shouting at a chaplain.
Master Cpl Arron Perry is one of five Canadian snipers nominated for a Bronze Star by American commanders for saving the lives of US troops during missions to root out die-hard Taliban and al-Qa'eda fighters in mountains.
Cpl Perry has been sent back to Canada to face, instead of a hero's welcome, a court martial on discipline charges, reported to be in connection with threatening remarks he is alleged to have made to the Canadian chaplain during a "stress debriefing".
The sniper is also under investigation in connection with a photograph showing the corpse of an Afghan fighter with a cigarette in its mouth and bearing a sign reading "F*** terrorism". He denies responsibility for the photograph, which was taken during combat.
Cpl Perry is now confined to the city of Edmonton, forbidden from carrying a weapon, and working in a supply role.
"Look at what they did to me," he said. "This is how they show their appreciation to me, by sending me back to Canada."
Military experts yesterday denounced what they called Canada's culture of disdain for its armed services, despite their courageous record in two world wars, as well as in the Korean war and numerous peacekeeping operations.
Canadian commanders have been unusually sensitive to any hint of misconduct since a scandal involving Canadian commandos serving as peacekeepers in Somalia, who beat a teenager to death while he was in their custody.
American plans to award Bronze Stars to all five Canadians have now been delayed.
OK, now we get to the essence of what's going on. I appreciate your interpretation. This is similar to police officers being expected to experience PTS following a shooting incident, when in reality they aren't stressed or feeling remorse. They are glad to be alive AND pleased the violent perp is dead. All the "counseling is for show.
I know officers who have been through this and they resent it.
Shoot, I bet we could get him citizenship in the Republic of Texas, and his namby-pamby "leadership" could go p*ss up a rope.
Right now it's 63.94 cents US.
The Canadian dollar ,in Canada, is worth 100 cents, the same as the US dollar in the US is worth 100 cents. The original post #66 comparing incomes in Calgary and Chicago is in local currency. Doesn't change the picture .
The mortgage interest on the American's home is fully tax deductible. No such deduction exists in Canada.
Come to think of it, the only thing I can think of that we don't get taxed on is lottery and casino winnings. (Of course they don't tell you that something like 30% of the lottery ticket's price is tax. Most of the casinos are government owned, so the government rakes in 100% of those profits.)
That's true but I also read an argument that said the tax deduction is a selling point in the US and because of that the price of the US house is more than the same house in Canada.( I really don't know but I do know any good salesman would use it in his pitch and I would think any seller would consider it when pricing the house). Before 1996 Canadian taxes were more than those in the US but since then the trend has been reversing.
Last week I saw a poll that said in 1998 something like 250 doctors had left Canada for the States and the same year 40 had returned from the States. In 2000 something like 200 had left and 150 returned. Another trend reversing.
