The rumor is that Shanley has information on previous Cardinals (now dead) who molested him while he was an altar boy and seminarian. Cardinal Law and Cardinal Medeiros supposedly were told by Shanley that he'd release the info if they did not recommend him for certain posts or tried to throw him out.

Cardinal Law might be a lot of things, but I do not believe he is a homosexual. Of course, this whole thing is so evil and unbelievable and grotesque and deep rooted, I don't know what I think anymore!

Thanks for the info. The issue now is restoring faith in the church. Any true Christian would gladly take momentary shame to ensure the saving of many thousands of souls. These guys need to come clean.

I was thinking similar thoughts when I posted #31. One thing I believe the Vatican should have addressed this week is the issue of blackmail. It is only natural for a man to want to have a woman, and celibacy is obviously a huge burden for any normal man.

Any priest who has been involved in adult heterosexual relationships should be told that this is their opportunity to come forward without reprecussions. Everybody steps out of line sometimes, and now if the time to separate the wheat from the chaff. I know parishoners will be understanding; I think many would sleep better at night knowing that the man is straight.

The laity need to be involved and work from within to fix this problem.

First, anyone having sex with children should be prosecuted; priests who have sex with children should be de-frocked. In fact, I would go so far as to say that if priests break their vow of celibacy, they should be removed from parish life and sent to a monestary or far away place to repent.

Second, the laity need to write letters to the bishops and cardinals, demanding that they take firm, solid, uncompromising steps to punish offenders, protect innocent priests, and prevent future sexual crimes.

Third, the Bishops must denounce homosexuality (not the person, but the act of homosexual sex) and tell homosexuals that the Lord will forgive them if they renounce their sin and seek forgiveness, starting in their heart.

Fourth, and most important, we need to stand by our church. The Catholic Church is about Jesus Christ. We worship our Lord, we praise Him, we love Him. The Church IS Jesus. The church may have evil members -- and I think that anyone who would prey on a child and hurt them so deeply is evil -- but the church herself is good. We need to remember that, pray, and take action.

God bless.

Unfortunately, we may eventually find out that this is true and not just rumor. In fact, this problem of sexual abuse and priestly homosexuality has been with us for a very long time and is about to be fully exposed. These are just honest intuitions and I hope I'm wrong.

Supposing the Catholic church looks back through the records-- might be a few loose canons fired, and a few saints defrocked.
