First, anyone having sex with children should be prosecuted; priests who have sex with children should be de-frocked. In fact, I would go so far as to say that if priests break their vow of celibacy, they should be removed from parish life and sent to a monestary or far away place to repent.
Second, the laity need to write letters to the bishops and cardinals, demanding that they take firm, solid, uncompromising steps to punish offenders, protect innocent priests, and prevent future sexual crimes.
Third, the Bishops must denounce homosexuality (not the person, but the act of homosexual sex) and tell homosexuals that the Lord will forgive them if they renounce their sin and seek forgiveness, starting in their heart.
Fourth, and most important, we need to stand by our church. The Catholic Church is about Jesus Christ. We worship our Lord, we praise Him, we love Him. The Church IS Jesus. The church may have evil members -- and I think that anyone who would prey on a child and hurt them so deeply is evil -- but the church herself is good. We need to remember that, pray, and take action.
God bless.
Anyone, including Cardinals or Bishops, who has enabled a fellow priest, passively or actively, to molest a child, must resign.
God will forgive them if they are repentant; but maintaining these people in positions of authority within the Church is no longer an option, if the Church is truly desirous of recovering its credibility.
Ask yourself: how can any lay person ever trust these clergy, such as Law, again? Christ called us to be faithful to his doctrines, and not to a person who has corrupted his doctrine. I'm not suggesting vengeance -- I'm urging that the Church must stop the bleeding, before it dies. Remember Christ's anger with the moneychangers in the Temple? I think most Catholics can relate to that state of mind today.
