Hezbollah fires on northern border; no injuries By Uri Ash and Amos Harel, Ha'aretz Correspondents
Guerillas from the militant Hezbollah organization renewed attacks along the northern border Wednesday, firing anti-aircraft shells.
Shrapnel from the shells landed in the northern town of Shlomi. There were no injuries and no damages reported.
Wednesday's attack was the first on the northern border since U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell visited the area about two weeks ago.
During his visit, Powell succeeded in bringing about a cease-fire on the northern front after relaying to Lebanese and Syrian leaders a clear and uncompromising message that the Americans objected to the increase in violence in the area.
After Powell left the region, Israeli security sources estimated that Hezbollah would resume its attacks on the northern border in the near future.
Security sources said, however, they believed that further American intervention could once again restore calm to the border.
Now, if Israel launches a counter-offensive of fighter jets into S. Lebanon, all in the interest of self-defense of land that is not remotely in dispute, the rest of the Arab world will rise as one and ululate, "Israel the Aggressor!! Israel the Mass Murderer!" The Arab world, in particular the crazies in the West Bank and Gaza, will argue that they have no choice but to resume terrorist activity against Israel.
So you see, the Arab crazies win both when they attack Israel and when they provoke Israel to respond.
I am sure that one of the messages of Sharon to Powell was that Israel was not going to sit back and take any more attacks on their northern border. If this shelling lasts for more than 48 hours, watch for Israeli fighters to be scambled.
Is the Lebanese government doing anything to stop the attacks - of course not - they support the actions of Hezbollah.
I vote that Israel kick some butt and take all the land from the southern border of Turkey to the whole Sinai Peninsula - including the land that is now Jordan and Syria. In my opinion, if those countries choose to do nothing to stop the Pali violence (in fact supporting it) then they don't deserve our recognition. Let Israel have it all ----- For that matter - they can have Iraq too!
Arabs are gonna whine no matter what you give them. So rather than feed the enemy, we should only provide them with money from tax dollars through our spending in the defense department, predominantly delivery systems in the air and ground forces.
The hell with that. Israel is fully capable of taking care of this. Time for us to stop interfering with them.
