http://www.nramemberscouncils.com/calerts/calert042302.shtml
AB2222 (Koretz) was voted on Today, April 23, 2002, in the Assembly Public Safety Committee. AB2222 FAILED TO GET ENOUGH VOTES TO PASS!
To all of you that repeatedly contacted the legislature in opposition to AB2222, THANK YOU ! ! ! Your efforts were successful.
AB2222 would have banned and/or heavily restricted the ownership, possesion and use of .50 caliber rifles.
AB2222 failed due to the votes of members of the Assembly Public Safety Committee from both parties.
Voting "NO" were Assembly Members Washington (Chairman), Dickerson, Keeley, and LaSuer. Abstaining was Assembly Member Diaz.
ACTION REQUESTED: Please contact these Assembly Members and THANK THEM FOR NOT SUPPORTING AB2222.
Washington, Carl.Washington@assembly.ca.gov (916) 319-2052

Thanks to all of those who called, emailed, faxed, etc.. What Koretz proposed was beyond absurd, it was obscene. Law abiding Americans should not be made liable for what foreign terrorists might do.

This is surprising, a .50 ban seems like the best possible move from a gun-banning standpoint.

It would force gun rights activists to defend a weapon most people don't think of as necessary.
(I'm not anti-gun, I just think politically it would be to their advantage to try to ban this)

A good news bang from the Golden State.

True. But at the same time, those who own the things tend to be rather wealthy, and highly respected members of the community.
The price of those rifles almost guaruntees that. It would not be easy to paint those folks as militia nuts.

"It would force gun rights activists to defend a weapon most people don't think of as necessary." "Necessary?" So what? Cadillacs and Jaguars and those limos Hollyweirdos ride to their Earth Day protests in sure aren't "necessary," either - but we don't want them banned!
Once you go down the slippery slope of "necessary," the next thing the antigun nuts will want is that .375 H&H you hunt brown bear with - or even that .308 deer rifle of yours. After all, it isn't "necessary" to hunt when you can buy food at any supermarket, is it?
Scandals of antigun politicians - from Kalifornia to Manhattan!

The Antis just haven't been able to sell the .50 BMG to the general public as a "sniper super-weapon". Given that no crimes have been committed with them, no amount of ranting and raving seems to work. And their arguments are too easily deflated by calling these guns precisely what they are: high-end target rifles.

Or what they might not do. Paul Koretz's legislation is totally unnecessary. Not even the most rabid gun banners can point to a SINGLE example of a .50 caliber weapon being used to commit a crime. The truth is its not even a criminal's first weapon of choice. Even the Rats own committee saw that wouldn't really take something off the streets most people can't afford to own anyway. Hopefully, it'll chill for a while the constant stream of anti-gun proposals being passed every other day by the State Legislature. I don't think that meets any one's definition of "reasonable" gun control. Let's give the existing laws on the books the chance to work first.

A good news bang from the Golden State I'm amazed this happened, given the horrid stuff proposed and passed by the Calif. legislature. An interesting impact of the proposed restrictions is an increase in orders for .50 Cal rifles. The lead time on orders has jumped based on demand. Cool!

That happens every time they do something like this. When Gray Davis signed several gun bills during his first year in office, gun sales shot up. Several of us nominated him for "Gun Salesman of the Year". Perhaps Barrett et al will send a nice thank you card to Assemblyman Koretz!
