The National Mall Saturday, April 20 11:30 a.m.
I decided I would check out the protests, after returning from a concert the night before. At the World Bank, I saw a quixotic crowd. While the majority of protestors aimed their angst at the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, some folks shouted anti-war slogans.
I chatted with a few of D.C.'s finest, noting the irony of my presence: I enlisted in the Army Reserves in March and will train to be a military policeman in August. I got the sense from the crowd that they didn't like the military, or cops for that matter. Feeling out of place, I headed over to the Ellipse.
Disinterested and about to head home, I saw a sight for sore eyes, an oasis of sorts. It was "The Patriots Rally for America." At last, I thought, I felt I had found a cause I believe in.
I purchased a button, but soon I noticed that I was not welcome here. I saw a man in a "Sore Loserman" T-shirt, was handed a "Sisters for the Second Amendment" pamphlet and saw signs telling "cowards" to go across the street to the other demonstrations.
The absolute low-light of the rally was "Battling" Bob Dornan, former California congressman and all-around fascist, who blamed liberals and Democrats in general for all the world's ills. He covered about 72 issues and lobbied numerous outrageous criticisms at "that pervert who spent eight years in the White House." He even attacked protesters in the crowd, branding them as "hippies" and "parasites."
I tracked him down and asked him, "Can someone be a liberal AND a patriot?" He gave me a look and spouted some stuff about how he marched with Martin Luther King in the '60s but that he wasn't sure that liberals could be patriots. Respecting his honesty, I shook his hand and headed home with sick feeling in my stomach.
I reflected on what confusing times we live in. On this day I wandered through the streets of D.C. and witnessed people rallying for dozens of causes, none of which I felt much of a connection with. Unable to make sense of it all, I concluded that I had simply witnessed a microcosm of the crazy world we live in.
That said I think the author of the piece forgets that it was CONSERVATIVES who set up the rally. Where might one ask were the Demorats or the DLCers?
The absolute low-light of the rally was "Battling" Bob Dornan, former California congressman and all-around fascistDo you know what a facist is stupid?
A qualified "yes".
The qualifications are only if Liberals are in complete control and their policies are the only ones being implemented!
Poor fella seems a little confused as to exactly what a fascist is. Logic might enlighten him to the fascists love of central government and control or at least involvement in all aspects of peoples lives. Sorta like the libs and democrats.
...was "The Patriots Rally for America." At last, I thought, I felt I had found a cause I believe in. I purchased a button, but soon I noticed that I was not welcome here.
Some people take Patriotism a little more seriously than just purchasing a button. Maybe you should have stayed a while and saw if you could learn something, expand your horizons. Oh, but thats right, youre a liberal first and foremost and that would go against your core values wouldnt it?
I reflected on what confusing times we live in.
Id guess theres a lot of things that must be confusing to a fine fella like this. Deciding that you already know everything there is to know and then not seeing the connection when things arent as you expect them to be.

."Can someone be a liberal AND a patriot?"
Well, yes... but not for long. If you are a patriot and not a phony, you will begin to perceive the fact that the basic liberal agenda in its present day incarnation is fundamentally anti-American. Oh, you can play games pretending you hearken back to the Hubert Humphrey Days of New Deal "compassion" waving the old 48 star flag under a State Capitol Dome painted in social realist murals by WPA artists, you can have read John Steinbeck and actually know who Adlai Stevenson was, but you cannot honestly call today's American leftist movement anything but anti-democratic, anti constitution, anti capitalist, and therefore... anti American. Sorry, but we all have to grow up sometime.
No.
Today is Earth Day, and, Lenin's birthday too!
You won't see many of these images in the mainstram media either, but in most of the Palestinian demonstrations (terrorist attacks actually) in Israel, the protesters are carrying red, hammer & sickle flags. The PLO is a Marxist organization, with Arafat at the helm.
Earth Day 2002
Yes, but only if in the "classical liberal" sense. Also, IMHO, one must a constitutionalist as well, in order to be a true patriot.
meant to type: "one must be a constitutionalist as well, in order to be a true patriot."
I guess not - However I didn't have hope after seeing the ANSWER press badge on her. Maybe she was offended by my comment about GW being too liberal? I'm glad the Hatchet has "fair and balanced" news to report.
