Elvis was Jewish, says new documentary

Thirty-five years after his death, rock 'n' roll legend Elvis Presley's personal life will stir up interest anew with a documentary that releases on Saturday.

Schmelvis: Searching for the King's Jewish Roots is a 76-minute documentary that will premiere at the Jewish Film Festival in Toronto April 20 and go to New York in May.

Produced by Montreal-based Diversus Productions, it is directed by Max Wallace, a Canadian investigative journalist and author, who contends Elvis was a Jew.

Wallace got the germ of his story from an article in the Wall Street Journal in 1998 that said Elvis' maternal great-great-grandmother Nancy Tackett was Jewish. Since Jewish identity is matrilineal, he infers the King was Jewish too. There's more evidence, he says.

The Schmelvis crew spoke with a landlady of the Presleys and a neighbour.When Elvis was about 15, the Presleys moved into a two-storey house in the Pinch, a Jewish neighbourhood in Memphis.

Fagie Shaffer, the landlady there, has a scrapbook containing a photograph of Elvis as a teenager with a beaky nose, thought to be a Jewish characteristic. Elvis had a nose job since then, she says.

Then there is the rabbi family who were the Presleys' top floor neighbour in the Pinch house.

This is news to a great many of Elvis' cousins and family, I asked a bunch of them about this and they say its a bunch of animal processed beta linked cellulose.

Well, it's been long known within the JEwish community that Elvis was a "shabbos-helper" to the orthodox Jews in mephis when he was young. This means that he basicaly performed tasks for Jews that they were not permitted to do themselves during the sabbath. There were other things he reportedly did that were of help to the Jewish community. Perhaps he knew he had Jewish roots.

You might also ask his family how long ago he died.
It certainly WASN'T thirty-five years ago! It was actually 28/29 years ago.
I hope their other information for this "documentary"
is not equally as flawed.

Jewish or not in heritage, his Dad was still an Assembly of God minister. . . . and Southern Gospel etc. had plenty of influence on him and on his music. What else influenced him is sad to ponder.

He was raised in a Baptist church. So I doubt there is any Jewish link.

Elvis has quite a blood line. He was Jewish, Scotch-Irish, French, and Cherokee Indian. I'd say he was as American as you could get.
