Proponents of drilling for oil in Alaskas Arctic National Wildlife Refuge fell 14 votes short of the 60 needed to shut off Senate debate on the proposal Thursday, thereby losing the chance to vote on it. A House-Senate conference committee will need to reconcile the House-passed energy bill which would allow drilling in the refuge with any energy bill the Senate passes, giving proponents of Arctic drilling another opportunity to reach their goal.

And more times than not, it works.Agreed! But the fact that gas prices will soar and the empty wallets will be uncomforable, the chance of spinning that would be remote. Only the die hards would buy the spin.
The republicans are getting better at the spin game as well.

Exactly. I want to hear lots of campaign commercials telling the public that the democrats want to keep us dependent on foreign oil. I want to get sick to death of hearing about it before election day.

I agree too, see, it's not about the party. It is about the ideology(conservativism) that must prevail!

I am surprised a little that they lost Snowe on this one. Unfortunately Maine has gone to the dark side.

AMERICA'S LOSS....OPEC'S GAIN........Thank you, traitors.

Chuck the Schmuch Schumer has the solution.....use our strategic oil reserves.Well, only the president can open it up in a declared national emergency, I think, not just because the prices are increasing.

Elderly Democrats will get pneumonia in the North from high heating oil bills.
More union manufacturing will move south or offshore.
Single moms in old bombers, tradesmen in old trucks will take a pay cut from higher gas prices.
More service men and women will be in foreign shores and land.
Union Teamsters will lose jobs.
However, rich leftist enviro's won out. Nice to see Democrat leaders take care of their most important people.

Strategic Oil reserves...
Right. Schumer is against ANWR, which has 10+ years of supplies, but he'll suggest using SOReserves which has about 36 hours of supply.
Schumer is an idiot.

MR-absolutely
ws-good point. I would bet public polls in Maine coupled with environmentalist activism were a factor...
In any event, I hope the proANWR unions take the 'Rats to task on this one....

The reserve crap worked one time but has had it's day. It will be tried ofcourse but I think people understand that it solves nothing.

There's still some residual traces of respect for our natural landscapes, but American consumerism is barreling ahead at full speed.
I have great respect for the environment, I think allot of Conservatives do.
But, if we need the resources located beneath it then we have a decision to make.
I just refuse to see this as an all or nothing proposal. I firmly believe we can get at those resources and not destroy life as we know it.
I believe in intelligent use. We have the technology, we have the need.. Why not go get what we desire?
PS: In the same vein, it's a little hypocritical to push drilling in ANWR and ignore offshore drilling in the Gulf.
That's another mistake we are making and a glaring inconsistency.

Exactly. I want to hear lots of campaign commercials telling the public that the democrats want to keep us dependent on foreign oil. I might amend that just a tad..."the democrats want to keep us dependent on TERRORIST oil"...the Saudis are NOT our friends.

"Senate Defeats Arctic Drilling"
Translation: Senate votes to continue US dependence on oil supplied by Wahabi terrorists.

Not really. I'm still planning to order a new one next week. Looking forward to crushing a few RAT-driven Yugos.
Fine, then look forward to higher gas prices too. Even if we opened ANWAR the saudis or venezualans would just drop production by 5%. Instead of increased production, another solution is decreased usage.

Although there are leases that are not being tapped, The cost is the significant reason. I expect that if prices stay high and the future expectations are that they will remain there, The rigs will start to move.
Also, remember that our refining capacity is near 100 % utilized. 70% is a comfortable number. We Need more refineries as well. Not a simple problem with the enviro's controlling the market like they do.
To: DoveTurnedHawk
If the obstructionist, unconstitutional, Democrat-controlled Senate continues to block oil drilling in ANWR, Bush can always issue an Executive Order in the name of national security. It's already proven that the caribou population would benefit exponentially. Daschle is just P.O.'ed because there's more reindeer in ANWR than voters in South Dakota.
